Testing 1-2 Testing 1-2; is there anyone out there??

Anyway, for a pair of restored to stock Dynaco MK lll's & Vlad causing all kinds of chaos & tube inflation, what KT88's or 6550's are out there that can handle a Mk lll reliably?

At this stage of the game, and assuming you are not looking for NOS, I would start with Jj tubes. I would *AVOID* anything made in China. Matching is a good thing, and technically, you need only match within an amp, not across the two of them, although if you are willing to pay the freight, that is not a bad thing either. The issue is that small differences between the amps more-or-less reduce the benefit of cross-amp matching anyway. Note also that within a few dozen hours, the tubes will have drifted to some degree as well.

Install the new tubes. Run the amp for about 10 minutes (ideally with a shorted input). Do the bias. Repeat every 30 minutes until there are no further changes.

Note to the rest of the multitude: These are mono amps based on the 6550/KT88 output in PP, 6AN8 driver, and 5AR4 rectifier. They are nominally rated at 60WPC with a heavy tailwind. They weigh ~25 pounds, or ~11.5 kg.

About covers it.

Yes, here's somebody out here. But that's all for now :-/ All the
former savvy ones seem to be quiet now. If you are lucky you may find
one or the other on one of these "Internet fora" - some say "forums" -
I don't care because I despise fora [insert Usenet lament here].
Kind regards, Eike

**FYI:

No new tubes have left China since 2019 due to factory closure.
No new tubes have left Russia since March 2022 due to Putin order.
Dealer stocks of popular types were quickly snapped up and are now exhausted.

Two-of-three statements are partially true.

The last is patently untrue, at least here in the US.

Prices are moderately up, but all the 'popular' tubes are readily available at the usual sources. Even Amazon. Really.

You lying POS fucking moron.

** How many did you actually buy lately ? None I bet.

I live in Sydney, Australia.
All trustworthy dealers here were cleaned out by April.
By scalpers, I bet.

I spent A$750 on March 5 this year, on X7s, T7s, 6L6s and EL84s.
A week later, the same dealer had none left.
Staff told me one customer bough A$10k worth, the entire stock.

FOAD you vile cunt.

Didja even look at the link?

"In Stock".

As a hobbyist, I purchase for personal use, and then only if my stock (~3,500 tubes) is low. I go to a former distributor for Sylvania and RCA (both made within 30 miles of where I sit) and by agreement, pay him 50% of the AES price. He probably has 50,000 or more tubes in his stock, all computerized and stored in a cool, dry place. He supplies a number of musicians and bands in the region.

As it turns out, I had a matched quad SED OTK 6550's in my collection so we'll start with those, can't get much better. I have a quad of Sylvania 6550's but those are my golden stash, last resort. JJ's have also been recommended by others- from a dealer that screens @ higher voltages. JJ's come from Slovakia, a NATO country. No problem sending money to them. A month or 2 ago- true, Russian tubes were tough to find, now some of the "1st line" dealers seem to have stock.

The drongo from Down Under lives by its own devices, as poor and benighted as they might be. But as the sole keeper of all sunlight and true knowledge, it is an absolute necessity in these troubled times.

I just received a lot of 16 Russian 6P41P tubes (as spares) by way of Poland - total of $72 including shipping. Given that I have 8 devices depending on them, not a bad deal.
