Hi RATs,

Is it just me or does anyone else really like the old Sherwood S5xxx
series of integrated amps? I have two - an S5000-II with 7868s, and an
S5500 with 7591s and these amp continue to impress me every time I hook
them up.

After listening to my rebuilt Citation II with KT90s for several months
I thought I'd never like any of my other tube amps again - including my
Kennedy ST70, and my rebuilt SCA-35s. But I pulled out the Sherwoods
and WOW! Of course they have less power that the Cit, but they sound
great and are 100% stock. The best part is they are still relatively
cheap on e-bay.

Hi Kevin,

I've recently dug out my old Sherwood S5500 to see if it could be repaired
(I paid $2 for it at Goodwill :-). It appears that my power transformer is
dead :-( Any idea where I might find a replacement? My amp uses 7591As
and I'm patiently waiting for RatShack to replace my two dead tubes.

Regards,

Raymond

It's funny because this is a total deja vu post. There was a
dude named Jamie who posted pretty much the same thing like 3 or
4 years ago on rat. I agree, they're a great value. Their
naugahyde cover and controls are fugly, but in the right
environment, that's cool!

Unfortuntely, you're going to wait a very long time for Radidio Shak to
replace 7591s, lifetime guarentee or not! Where are they going to get them?

Hi Eric,

The manager wouldn't reveal the source (if he knew it), but I stressed that I
needed exact replacements, a matched pair, and he said that's what I'd get. The
retail price he quoted me was $179 per tube :-o He said the tubes were coming
from their Warranty Fulfillment Center where they are outsourced. I'm really
not holding my breath though.

Yup, the 7868 is really a nice tube....shame it's such an oddball!

Wonder if anyone will make 'em again?

When I first got a Fisher X-100-B and saw 7868's in the back, I was a bit
scared. My fears have diminished over time. They are not half a scarce or
expensive as I feared. NOS are about $20 each. I just got five NOS 7868's
from eBay for $100. However, this won't last forever! Has anyone made a
7868 ->7591 converter yet?

I have a Sherwood 2000 tuner and 1000 integrated amp for sale if any of you
are interested? The tuner is AM/FM and the amp is 36 watts mono. Nice
looking pair with gold chrome trim.

I have three Sherwood S5500's - a II and two IIIs - all using 7868, as well as
a pair of S8000IV receivers with essentially the same amp section. I think
they all sound absolutely great. I prefer them to the sound of my Fisher and
Scott 7591 amps (299C, KX200), and really my EL34 amps too (Scott 272, Dyna
ST70, Pilot SA260). They sound more like EL84 amps but with a fuller bottom to
me. I agree they are a bargain and the looks grow on you! They made
exceptionally nice tuners in their day too - a lot of them were used as
broadcast monitors by FM stations.

BTW, the OPT in the S1000 w/ 7868s is the same as those in my S5500s and S8000,
so there may be a tranny option for those burnt out ones if you can find a
junker.
