Depends what you mean by decent! How much wad are you intending to blow?

Audio Note UK do 4 grades of OPT, with the top end costing around ?600
quids for a trannies. You can pay even more if you want one of their
silver wound affairs. They do a wide range of transformers for lots of
valves - what were you intending to build around?

Also there is a place called sjs electroacoustics. You can't contact
them by phone so I don't deal with them. ANyone out there with any
experience?

I'm building a facsimile of TdP's EAR 859 and got my trannies from him. They
appear outwardly to be of excellent quality.

Hope this is of some help.

I was contemplating building a tube ('valve' in the UK) amp
a few years back but hit a problem I couldn't resolve. Where
the hell can you get decent output transformers?

Cheers,

I would do well to subscribe to a tube audio enthusiast magazine.
Here in the colonies, Glass Audio (Audio Amateur Publications,
P.O. Box 576, Peterborough, NH 03458-0576) is one. Ads are regularly
found for components, including output transformers. There are
companies making high quality output transformers, and selling them
to do-it-yourself enthusiasts.

I have not connection is Glass Audio etc etc.

Nic: Output tranformers are a problem, but not so big you
can't get around it. I'm presently building a tube amp myself and
found that Magnequest makes transformers. I'm waiting for
word from one of the guys at Magnequest about my particular
application. I also have a subscription for Glass Audio
on the way. I have been told that GA takes on many tube
designs from the bottom till finish. They also have lots
of articles for all manner of tube related parts in the
back of the magazine. If you are serious about tubes,
there are ways to get what you need. You can't get what
you need from Newark or Radio Shack though.

Scour some hamfests and ask around for what you want.

If you're feeling really inspired, you could possibly find an old
modulation transformer from an AM transmitting in the power range you seek,
then rewind the output of said transformer to meet your specs.
