Hello all,

I recently saw an ad for some tubes in Audiomart that IMHO were bogus, and
even though I called to tell the owner of the shop my suspicion, he stated
"well, I think they're real and unless someone can show me documentation
otherwise, I'll sell them"

The problem is there is no documentation to prove that they are or are not
real. However there are still ways to tell (color and type of lettering,
internal structure, batch codes, date codes, glass characteristics, boxes,
etc).

At the local hamfests where I lurk as well as a couple larger dealers I know,
I would say that in the audio numbers there is about a 50/50 ratio of phoney
versus real stuff.

Would a web page on tube ID as well as a FAQ on audio tubes (what does diamond
bottom mean? etc...) be helpful?

What else would you want? Who made what? Relationships in manufacturing?
What worked in your system?

I'm going to hire someone to put a web page together for me, and thought this
might make sense. This will take a little time, of course. And of course I'm
sure there will be space limitations.

One concern is that the re-labelers could then use the info provided to help
in making better boots....but I don't know if that is a valid concern or not.
If you have suggestions, let me know....

There's a good page at http://www.aros.net/~tboy/ampage/ampage.html.
