I just got an old Hiwatt with some Chelmer brand KT88s in it. What are
they? Anyone out there know? They appear to be shorter than the GEC type
and have aluminum bases like the GEC, but then again, they don't look to be
'newer' (?).
Thanks!

Chelmer Valves are another British valve supplier, in the traditions of
Colmor Electrononics, Watford Valves, and Billington Export. They sell some
NOS, and bases, but also sell their 'own' brand of valves, like Billington
do. These are mostly Chinese in origin if I remember rightly. These KT88s
will be re-badged Chinese 6550s, be careful about the tolerances (Chinese
valves are normally a bit temperamental!)

I don't think anyone is making real KT77.
AAMOF, I don't think they're real KT77
if MO Valve didn't make them, I've heard of
EL34's being relabelled and sold as some
lame excuse for KT77.
Real British KT77 have a unique internal plate structure
which will not be mistaken for EL34 if you've
ever seen it, simply having a round top
does not a KT77 make.

Uncle Ned's right on the money. Real KT77s haven't been made since MOV
closed shop many years ago.
The KT77 isn't enen a true pentode, but is actually a beam tetrode.
Its ratings were pretty hefty for an 'EL34' type; pd 32 watts, 850 max
plate volts, 650 max screen volts, 200mA max cathode current. Try
running a Chelmer KT77 at those ratings, and you'll think July 4th
came early. Anyway, to tell if an alleged KT77 is the real item, peek
through the inspection holes. An EL34 will have 3 grids, whereas a
KT77 will have a long rectangular beam forming electrode in there.

The guys at Valve Art are working on KT77's.
I don't know if they already released them.

Since my original Golden Dragon KT66s fizzed when run gently, I'm afraid the
ability of Chinese valves to run at original spec. is a bit suspect. These
'KT66s' did not handle the full power of 6L6s, much less a super-7581A
(which is what the KT66 should be). I guess you should enquire, and maybe
get a test pair to see how good they are. A good valve tester (which you
could improvise) should give you some info, as would a visual inspection
(rigidity of construction, size and type of anode for cooling, thickness of
glass, strength of bass - you can often judge the quality of a valve by
this).
A KT77 isn't an EL34 to my knowledge - but I could always be sadly mistaken!

Chris,
I've got a CVC box sitting on my monitor with a (dead) metal 6K8 in
it. Question: those metal octal tubes from WW II, do they have glass
inside, or is it just "metal"????

I didn't say the Valve Art EL34 is a KT77, but that they are developing one.
The VA EL34 is a 'real' (pentode) EL34.
In what kind of amp are you using them? How do they compare to other EL34's?
I haven't got to try them myself, but these are some of the best looking
EL34's I know (really heavy construction).
