I tried 2 different versions made by RCA: grey plate with circular getter and
black plate with D shaped getter. The black plate sounds a little better with
better resolution but not much. Any suggestions for other 12BH7 to try out?

Hi

About what I tried, The GE 12BH7 with tall plates is one of the best. Warm sound
with resolution.

How long are the plates? What getter type? Have you done any comparison with
those RCAs that I have?

I liked the Yugo,(EI) version of the 12BH7. Sturdy, inexpensive, and nice
sounding! :)

I agree

Watford valves has 3 or four versions for sale, not expensive, NOS--I tried
all these in VTL300 amp
best of them seemed to be the GE (much deeper base and palpable space than
mullard or Sylvania)

Out of curiosity (and to check the competition) I checked the Watford website. They do perform extensive testing on tubes, but we do sell NOS 12BH7s for less. However, something I saw regarding Harma brand 12AX7s caught my eye. The following paragraphs are a direct cut-and-paste (the caps are theirs):

"We currently offer two types of ECC83/12AX7 under the Harma brand name."

 "Harma ECC83"
"This valve is LOW TO MEDIUM gain double triode which is easily at home in the high gain circuits. The
valve is very low on microphonics and has a clean clear tone with forward brightness when distorted."

 "Harma ECC83 VINTAGE U.S.A"
"This is a LOW GAIN low amplification double triode. The valve is internally
ruggidised to military Specification. It has lower distortion than a standard 12AX7
or ECC83. This makes it the ideal choice for country players and bassist as the
valve is very difficult to clip and remains clean. Each valve has balanced triode
sections which makes ideal for Audio."

Ummmm, these 12AX7s are described as "low to medium gain" and "low gain". What kind of "12AX7s" are these? Regular 12AX7s are supposed to have a gain of 100, which is about the highest gain of a common triode. If one is looking for a lower-gain 12AX7 for guitar, why not just get a 5751?
