Does anyone know if the Sovtek 6CA7 is in any way compatitable(pin?)
with good old EL34 ? Heard it should be good.

May have to adjust bias slightly as is the ideal thing whenever
you put new tubes in . Pin connections are identical-- this is a
beam power tube so sounds a little different --I think its great
--will occas fail but they don`t short and are getting more reliable.

Got a pair of Sovtek 6CA&/EL34 in my ST-70 last September to replace a
pair of Tesla EL34 that I accidentally broke. On the same amp I have a
pair of three years old National (?) EL34 made in E. Germany. The Sovek
sounded fine at first, but appearently enjoyed a very short life. The
channel with Sovtek tubes on it seems to have much lower output than the
other one. I've talked to AES where I got the Sovtek from. According
to them, the Sovtek tubes have a average life at about 6-9 months. On
the other hand, they don't short or explore, and while they are new,
sound just fine....

Take care of the diameter about 40 mm for Sovtek 6CA7 versus about 32 mm
for EL34
(a problem whith my Heath AA40 where output tubes are really near output
transfo)

The 6CA7 is pin compatible and, in general, application compatible with
the EL34.
The original Mullard EL34s (and many modern EL34s), a true pentode design,
have a big, rich sound with prominent bass and smooth high frequency
response. The original Sylvania 6CA7 (STR) is a beam tetrode with a
similar overall sound, but to my ears seems more accurate with better
imaging (compared to original Mullards in a modified Dyna III). It uses a
6550 plate in a 6L6GC envelope with EL34 pinout. Tough to find and
getting expensive. The Sovtek 6CA7 is patterned after the Sylvania. It
looks like a well made product and seems rugged and stable in operation.
Unfortunately, in my amps it sounded much harsher and lacked bass compared
to the Sylvania. This may be a desirable characteristic in a lead guitar
amp. I hope that Svetlana will make a beam 6CA7 in the future, because
their quality seems better. I'm burning my last set of Sylvanias.
