Hi,

I am about to pick up my old passion. I still have my LS3/5A's , but i am
kinda wondering what valve amp's will suit them best. I used to have
homebuilt hybrid's EL84/mosfets but id like to go valves. Does anyone have
any idea ? (before i walk into the shop)

Many tnx,

Frank

Frank,

Have a look at the Rogers E-40a valve amplifier, which was designed to drive
these speakers. http://www.stoneaudio.co.uk
We can also supply this in a 110-120V US Version

If you require any further information, or I can be of any further help,
please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards

All reasonably powered tube amps do well. So far the best I have heard is the
Harmon Kardon Citation V (with 7581), a totally undervalued amp.

I have used LS3/5As off and on for 25 years with a variety of tube amps.
The very best amp of them all was an original hand-built Julius Futterman
H3AA stereo or a paif or Futterman mono amps. These OTL amps work well into
higher impedances, up to about 32 ohms. In fact the best of my LS3/5A
set-ups was a stacked double set wired in series to a pair of Futterman
monoblocks, for a 30 ohm load. Fantastic! The top speaker in each side's
stack was inverted, so drivers were woofer/tweeter/tweeter/woofer, with a
1-1/4" spacer between top and bottom speaker. Imaging was excellent, power
handling was up and dynamics were improved. These amps are around if you
look hard enough.

Next best amp is my current configuration of Luxman M3045B triode
monoblocks. Unmodified 3045s using the scarce 8045G triode are best, but
the KT88-converted amps sound quite good as well, wired pentode or
pseudo-triode mode.

Another great amp for LS3/5As is an Audio Research Dual 51, which show up on
eBay from time-to-time well under $1000. ARC Dual 76A works well with a
double stack.

I have gotten great results from Marantz 8Bs, Mac 40s and modified Dyna
Stereo 70s.

Among modern amps, if you have the cash, the VAC Avatar integrated is simply
outstanding with these (or many other)speakers, as is the Mesa Tigris.
