Are these any good with tubes? They purport to have 100dB sensitivity,
which sounds really interesting. They supposedly also list for $1000.
Anyone know anything about them?

Thx,
Vandit

As I recall from the days when I was selling such equipment, the Studio
Monitor series from Infinity was their answer to Cerwin Vega. Although it
has been quite a few years since I heard these speakers, my recollection was
of a "foam" tweeter that was not very detailed and yet delighted in taking
your head off, and a loose bottom end that boomed like hell. Mind you, I
never played them with tubes. I also recall these speakers being pretty
heavily discounted.

Hope this helps.

I hate to admit it, but I still have a pair of Infinity SM-152s (my
first pair of "good" loudspeakers) that I sometimes listen to with my
Dynaco Stereo 70. Because of their extremely high sensitivity
(~104db/W/m), the Dynaco pushes them around with no problems. They can
crank loud, very loud! The booming bottom of the Infinitys even makes
up for the somewhat anemic bottom end of the Dynaco. The highs though
are undetailed at best, shrill at worst due to the 1" foam dome
tweeter. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips, guys. Based on this, I've decided not to get these
speakers.

I had seen these things back in the early 90's and whew! Man, they are
sensitive and can still handle allot of power. These things a freakin'
loud. SPL!! They seem a little bright though. You can find these things
in the newspaper or the like for a couple hundred bucks used. Don't buy
these things used. You probably won't listen to them too long. Believe me,
they are not a laid back speaker.

Hi Vandit,

The SM series are studio monitors. Last time I heard a pair
was about 4 years ago. They struck me as being a little too
bright (on solid state gear), but had a cleaner bottom than
some of the comparable speakers that I was auditioning. I
have had good luck with an older (10 + years) pair of
Infinity RS2000 bookshelf speakers. Sensitivity is about 92
dB and they are 6 ohm nominal impedance. I think the bright
Infinity sound goes well with the older tube amps that I've
been using lately.

I have the same feeling that once harsh sounding speakers on ss gear,
they love tube. Base on the suggestion of RAT, I refoamed my Advent. I
just had this done yesterday, it already sounds wonderful. (Thanks to
those who encouraged me to give a new life to this speaker). Another
example is the Dynaco A25. The guy who sold it, had it hooked up with a
Sony receiver, must thought I was deaf to pay him $35.00 for it.

There is a new SM lineup out. They are on the Infinity website. Different
drivers and cosmetics; same high efficiency. Haven't heard them though so I
can't comment on the sound.
I'm more interested in the Klipsch KLF-20s. I've heard them and they sound
pretty good. The thing that scares me is that Stereo Review measured a 3 ohm
impedance between 100 and 200hz. I'm looking for a mate for my Citation II and
I don't know how it behaves into low impedance loads. Anyone running the
KLF-20s with tubes or the Citation into a demanding load?
Thanks,
Jeff
