On the topic of Russian small tubes, I've had experience with
ElectroHarmonix 12AT7 (shipped from Triode in place of JJ/Teslas, which
were presumably out of stock at the time). Wonderful tubes. Also have
had good experience with Sovtek 12AX7's. Out of half-a-dozen I've tried,
none were unduly microphonic (one of my biggest criteria in small tubes,
especially when used as input stages).

I have no experience with Sovtek 12AX7 tubes,
but the preamp kit I built ca. half a decade ago, a
Raphael Orthophic VII, originally came with six
Sovtek 6922 tubes, and these proved to be quite
microphonic (all equal), especially when used
in the MM input stage.
Then I tried a few Svetlana 6922 which proved somewhat
less microphonic, but not equally so.
After some experimentation I ended up with Valvo E188CC
before the passive RIAA network, Amperex 7308 thereafter,
and the original Sovtek 6922 in the line level stage.
Okay, that was five years ago, and Sovtek 6922 are not
Sovtek 12AX7, so no conclusion on current Sovtek 12AX7
or general current Sovtek quality at all from me.

Hello all,
I have a follow up on the Svet 12AX7's- had been on "Newtube's"
website and had seen in the description that these were NOT
recommended for guitar amp usage (fine for hi-fi use), so i contacted
them as to the reason for this. I got a very quick and courteous
response from Joe Sausa that the current Svet 12's in the pipeline had
a pronounced 60 cycle hum, but the upcoming production will have
remedied this so that tubes shipped in the next few months should be
free of this problem. He recommends highly the electro-harmonix
12AX7EH (of which i heard great things) and so i will be approaching
my preamp re-tubing from this angle- let's face it, preamp tubes are
really pretty affordable and the chance to experiment with the EH's
will be interesting, and i can always pickup some of the Svet's later
on down the road. Many thanks to the responses to this thread, and i
will update as things progress.

Thanks Dr. for an interesting report. However, it begs the question as
to why tubes with a pronounced 60 Hz. hum would be considered fine for
hi-fi use. I can only speculate that the assumption is that all
low-level hi-fi amps would be using DC on the filaments... On the other
hand, considering that low-level preamps would tend to be phono stages
in which the bass is boosted considerably...
In either case, I think I'll avoid the Svetlanas for the time being. I
can second (or third?) the opinion on the ElectroHarmonix valves, they
are indeed quite nice.
