One of the original GEC valves KT66 has stoped working in my QUAD II.
How should I replace it and with which valve (from which supplier ? )

Thanks,

Harold

In my (highly biassed) opinion, the only thing to replace it with is
ANOTHER GEC KT66 (which I just happen to be able to supply, in a choice
of 2 designer colours {grey & clear}) But failing that, EL34s work OK
(but don't look right) and 6L6s can be used if you can accept a loss of
power and you increase the cathode resistor to 270r .
Replace the cathode resistor anyway - they inevitably fail.
The choices are :
tube mod
KT66 none
EL34 none
EL37 none
807 socket change, anode cap (bad for cats, toddlers etc)
6L6 cathode resistor
and many others

Hi Harold,
Too bad about the deceased KT 66. NOS KT 66 will
cost about $100US each and used can nbe had for $50+ depending on
condition. Alternative tubes are WE 350 (very expensive / rare $250 ea),
EL 37 (NOS $75 - $100), 7581A ($25 - $35), 807 (anode cap and special
socket required as well as possible bias adjustment $12 ea), 6L6GC
($15 - 20 ea). Naturally, each tube has a different sonic result.

Just use a search engine using vacuum tubes and you will be able
to follow up a number of retail options.

for what it's worth

Dear Harold

the QUAD handbook says that the KT66 valves can be replaced with matched
5881 tubes. I'd recommend the Sylvania. Angela Instruments has them
matched at a veru competitive rate. You can see their catalog at

http://www.angela.com/catalog/

hope this helps

Original GEC (UK) KT66 valves are kinda expensive....$100 +

In my rather highly biased opinion, you should consider the Golden Dragon
KT66 Retro. It's a brand new tube-but not from the Chinese Shuguang
factory- that looks and sounds almost exactly like the original type. We
compared the construction of the Dragon KT66 Retro to a GEC tube and could
barely tell them apart. Reports of their sonics in Quad II amps are
that they sound wonderful and very much like the originals.

They're not super cheap- $150/pair- but they're significantly less than a
GEC NOS tube, *and* they have a one year warranty.

I work part-time for Tubes by Design (US distributor for Golden Dragon),
so consider this info biased, but these tubes really are excellent and
designed exactly for this application.

Another tube that will substitute for the GEC KT66 is the GEC KT8C. This
is the ceramic base transmitting version of the KT66. It has a top cap
anode and a wierd 5 pin british base.

Internally, it is the closest thing to the KT66 available for under
$50.00.

I have some early 1960's NOS british military KT8C for $40.00 each

The KT66 is the best for that Quad.....
Or you can just use 807 valves.....they are cheap as dirt..and they look
similair to the KT66 but have a anode cap....that looks cool....
Sound of 807 is next best thing ...
But then agiain...its a bloody sin to have anything but a KT66 in a
QUAD.....
So find a used one for about $50......

THE SOVTEC 5881 WORKS VERY WELL IN THE QUAD But pays to change the
grid resisters to 470k. even the KT66 was not meant to have 680k grid
resisters.

Another usable tube is a 6L6GC. The British Kinkless Tetrode 66
(KT66) was designed as the British version of a 6L6.
I've used 6L6GC's in Quads and they work fine; no need to alter
bias etc.
