My problems is, notwithstanding the wide selection of electronics texts
available at bookstores in my area (Phildelphia), I have not been able
to locate any books that deal with the basics of tube amplification
circuit design. Can anyone recommend a few good sources?

The best that I've seen so far is "The Ultimate Tone: by: Kevin
O'Connor. This book is really the ABC's of tube amps.

I have a shelf full of tube engineering books and think that _Valve
Amplifiers_ by Morgan Jones is the best combination of accesible, useful
information and good engineering. It is available from OCSL at 603 924
6371.

The "Ultimate Tone" by Kevin O'Connor of London Power should fit the
bill. It's not a primer for neophytes but as long as you have a grasp
of the basic elements of electronics it should assist you greatly in
your experimentation.
O'Connor also has a companion book titled "Tonnes of Tone" which
discusses in detail the construction of several circuit building
blocks you may find useful for your experiments.... things like a
couple of different varieties of pre-amp tone control modules, a bench
power supply etc.
Check out the London Power web site for more info:
