12at7 AND 12ax7 should work no problem. What you can't use is a 5751 in the
12ax7 position. What did you try, and what was the result?

I think I have the problem figured out. Owner sent me a private e-mail and
said it was an early model. The early SJ202A had 12AU7/6N1 and 12AX7/6N2.
The literature states they use a 12AT7 in the (in his early production
model) 12AU7 position. A 6N1 is a 12AU7..not 12AT7.
Like I said in my earlier post....in the 302 and 502 you cannot use 5751 in
the 12AX7 position. At least in my experience. It creates a hell of a hum.
You know, I love the way this stuff sounds. It really does sound good. But
the fact that this guy couldn't get an answer from the manufacturer (and I
sell their stuff) is pretty bogus.
I have a guy who bought some Mullard CV4024's from me for his SJ302A's 12AT7
position. The SJ302A broke, and he asked why. They said it was the Mullards
that were responsible (so the customer states) and the evidence was because
the tubes have a bright flash when you turn the amp on. Duuuuuuuuuuh.

6N1 and 6N2 are typical Chinese tubes and do not have European or US
cross references
Only the Russian made 100% equivalent of those
6N1 China = 6H1pi Russia
6N2 China = 6H2pi Russia
If you want I could fax or snail you replacement guide.
12AX7/5751 is only near equivalent of 6N2 that not works in all
circuits
ECC87/is only near equivalent of 6N1
6N3 is only near equivalent of ECC85

I believe your are correct! I have tried Sovtek and Philips 12AX7's in place
of both the 6N1 and 6N2. The filaments will not light in either socket. The
6N2 is indeed similar to the 12AX7 but there is no filament tied to pin 1
on the 6N2. Armed with this information I am going to contact the
manufacturer once again to see about getting this unit retrofitted (I know
just enough about tube electronics to get myself into trouble). In the event
that this cannot be done I would welcome your catalog as quality replacement
tubes do not seem to be available in the states for this unit. Please send
by email if possible.
