I"m using a Musical Fidelity X-Cans V2 (with the X-PSU power supply) to
drive Etymotic ER-4S canal phones. The amp is quite good on its own, with
excellent detail and resolution, and sound terrific with my alternate
headphones -- Beyer DT-990 Pros. However, the sound is a bit cold and
clinical with the Etymotics (which have a Quad ESL-63 like tonal balance).
The X-Cans V2 uses 2 Phillips ECG JAN 6922/E88CC tubes in series. I've
tried swapping out those tubes for a pair of JJ/Tesla I had sitting around
or using the single Tungsram I have on hand (with one of the Phillips) --
with little or no significant alteration to the sound. Anybody do any tube
swapping with this unit, and have any ideas on effective tube substitutions
that might bring a little more mid-range warmth and romance to this unit.

Thanks in advance,

Matt C

You could probably do with some Mullards 6922 types. My friend bought the
X-Cans V1 from mi, and he is very happy with the sound, warmer, less sharp. He
uses Grado SR-80s, btw.

You can also try Amperex 6922s, but try the PQ ( Premium Quality ) ones......
kinda big bucks though.
