Hi Folks,

Any experiences on matching the B&W DM302 or DM305 speakers with vintage tube
amplifiers?

Thanks,

Nestor

I've used the 302 with my 300B triode amp.

The 302 is very efficient and easy to drive.

It is quite detailed and images well for its price range.

The cabinet colorations are kept in check by the clever Prism system of internal
echo control.

My biggest complaint with the 302 is that the lower midrange is somewhat
suppressed, making the speaker sound a bit thin and bright.

A competitor such as the Kef Coda 7 has a more natural and musical midrange, and
I prefer the Kef.

Another good speaker is NHT Superone, though it's less efficient and can't be
driven with a SET amp. It can be driven easily with 30 plus tube watts, however.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the info re the B&W speakers.

Guess what?

I got me a pair of Tannoy Mercury M3s instead.

They sounded terrific for the price and look nice too!

I will report on how they behave with my MC275.

Regards,

Nestor

I've been impressed with the Mercurys also. Unfortunately, I believe Tannoy is
going out of business, by the way.

Hi Hugh,

Tannoy's sister companies Mordaunt-Short and Epos went out of business not
too long ago. However, I have heard nothing about Tannoy and Goodmans. Let's
hope it doesn't happen. Tannoy speakers are really nice and the name brand is
extremely well known wordwide. They also take great care in the assembly of
the speakers. Superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. My Mercury M3s
cost me just over $350 and the sound is unbelievable. These are great
speakers for tube amplifiers. Wan't to save a venerable speaker company? buy
Tannoys!

Regards,

Nestor
