I've found a source of these tubes in Vancouver, BC. They are made in England and I'm wondering if english Amperex tubes are OK or better. Thanks in advance. If this is a bonanza, I'll be glad to post the suppliers name and address if that's not a breach of 'netiquette.

never heard of Amperex 6550, it might be relabeled Chinese 6550.

I can assure you that Amperex never made a 6550. For that matter 6550's were
never made in England (or Germany, for that matter...I've seen these offered
too).

The easy way to tell a Chinese 6550 is the hoop for the getter, which looks
like a thick washer. Recently Philips has been offering Chinnese made 6550's.
These should not be confused with the ones they made in the U.S. which had a
straight glass envelope. Chinese 6550's use an "ST" envelope (curved at the
top).

While were on the subject of forgery, I still see a hi-fi dealer in Arizona
offering Amperex JAN 7308 10 for $100. Though when I called him I told him
they were fakes (based on some identifying marks not there), he still offers
them. Also says he can get plenty more (wouldn't that be great if it were
true?) His ad is in Audiomart.

I also saw some GREAT EL34's made by Telefunken...oops...labeled "MADE IN
ENGLAND" on one side and "MADE IN W. GERMANY" on the other. Maybe they got
confused.

Unfortunately, it's becoming more commonplace. ---Kevin Deal

Yes, beware of tubes that cone from unusual sources, like an Amperex 6550.
FYI, there lots of fucking scumbags out there that are re-lableing
Chinese firecracker tubes with the labels of good manufacturers. I've
seen Russian 6V6s labeled as Westinghouse, and Chinese 12AT7s with the
same label. If you buy tubes, make sure you can return them if indeed
they are counterfits. Moreover, threaten to turn the dealer over to the
law for fraud. Big jail-time usually.

Regards.

I have a set of "Amperex" 6550's and they're identical to some Chinese Gold
Aero tubes that I also have. They even die like the Chinese 6550's.
Amperex - no. Junk - yes. I'd stay away from them.

So did the old American Tung Sol 6550s. The Tung Sol is generally
regarded as the best of the 6550s, while the Chinese copy is no doubt the
worst. I assume everyone has heard the story of the guy who bought a
bulk-pack box of Chinese 6550s, and he found one with a cigarette butt
inside.

Regards.

Does anybody know how to identify Tung-Sols? I have 2 tubes that have an
Octagon with 6550 printed in the middle.

I recently saw Amperex labelled 6550's at my local electronics store.
Without question they were Chinese!!!! Beware.

A real Tung-Sol 6550 should have the number printed in an octagon on the
glass, using an indelible paint. The base ring should be a bright
nickel color, not the yellowish steel seen on the Chinese version.
Tung-Sol had three variations of gettering in the tube, and one
of them matches the Chinese (top and 2 sides), so that's no guarantee.

I too have seen Chinese 6550s labeled Amperex (supposedly the
brandname now belongs to some tube remarker) and Philips (unable to
find out if the actual Philips co. is behind this).
Real Tung-Sols (New in box) often sell for more than $150 now.

Blasphemy!! Calling a Chinese piece of shit by that respected name makes
me puke. Some scumbag trying to fool unsuspecting consumers. He should
be horse-whipped.

That's the good ones...re-branded chinese are not uncommon, however. The side
getters look like thick washers on Chinese 6550's and KT88's. I have some
original Gold Lion KT88's in original boxes that are Chinese. Had always
heard they did that towards the end, and it bummed me out when I opened them.

I hadn't heard that one, but I did hear about the guy who bit into a piece of
a Kentuky Fried Chicken leg and it was a 211/VT4C......

Kevin - This is Charles Gray with Svetlana Electron Devices. We recentley issued our latest
revision of the 6550 and called it a 6550C. This was done logically as the next step since we
had gone thourgh the 6550B/B1/B2 and B3. The 6550C had considerable plating, heater and other
design changes to help eliminate it going gassy at an early life and gave it stablilization (cut
out cathode starvation). We did not give it a thought that the public might perceive our
Svetlana tube as Chinese. To help eliminate the problem we are considering renumbering the tube
SV6550C to insure everyone can identify the Russian tube. If you are the group corresponding on
this have a problem, please let us know.

Thanks

Charles Gray
