I am getting small clicks when I record a wav file (using Cool Edit)
from a CD source or analog tape. If I record a track it sounds good for
10 seconds then the wav file starts to click at random. I have a AC97
soundcard and a PIV processor. What can I do to make clean recordings of
my music on my hard drive?
Thank you
Evin

Sounds like you have some other program running that is trying to access
the hard drive too much while it is recording, causing dropouts.

In addition to David's suggestion, you may also be clipping the signal. Back off on the input signal level.

To further elaborate what David has pointed out: Shut down all running
programs, and background programs such as screen savers and disable
any automatic task scheduling programs.

If you're using a Windows PC, use Ctl-Alt-Del to shut down all
programs except Explorer, Systray, and your ripping application (Cool
Edit).

To be extra sure that everything else is shut down, do Start -->
Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Information -->
Tools --> System Configuration Utility -->Startup tab, and disable all
of the programs (except Explorer and Systray) by unchecking them. Then
reboot your computer.

When you're all done, don't forget to REenable those other programs.
Good luck.
