I want to get a preamp and amp, or an integrated amp, or even a
receiver that will sound as good as possible for under $500. If it
includes a tuner, so much the better.

I don't know what's the best value in this price range. Any advice
(with reasons for your opinions) would be appreciated!

In amps in this price range I've seen
Parasound HCA-1000
Harman-Kardon Signature Series PA 2200
Adcom GFA 535 or 535II or 545 or 555
McIntosh MC2105, and "matching preamp"
McIntosh MC2505
Marantz MM500
Onkyo tx-313 Pro
Carver TFM-15
Hafler 9130
And some others.

In Preamps in this price range, I've seen
Adcom GFP 555II
Adcom GTP 500
Carver C-1
Carver C-4000
Carver FM-45
McIntosh MX112
NAD 1300
Parasound PR-200
some low-priced Haflers
And some others.

In integrated Amps:
NAD 3300

The Adcom GTP-400 and GFA-535 combination should be available for
~$400.00 used.

Sound quality is excellent. The 535 was considered among the best
budget amps of the mid '80s. The 400 is a tuner preamp and the sound
quality is comparable to seperate units costing far more. The phono
section in particular was cited as being head and shoulders above the
competition.

Another possibility in this price range is vintage tube equipment.

The ubiquitious Dynaco ST-70 amp (35 wpc)/ Dyanco PAS-3 preamp and the
FM-3 tuner combination is available for ~$500.00.

Other choices include a Scott 299c or Fisher X-202 integrated amp and
either a Scott LT-110 or Fisher FM-100 tuner. Both combinations would
provide ~ 30wpc and cost less than $400.

To my ears, vintage tube equipment is the way to go when you want sound
quality consitant with value. The equipment may be more finicky than SS
but the sound is * definately * worth it.

Good Luck!
