i have an ES-8 and i'm very satified. being on a tight budget pretty
much eliminated a lot of choices. but i got it for under $300 and it
makes a world of difference in the enjoyment of home theater...

I have owned the Take 5 speakers for a few weeks now and am very happy
with them. I read several reviews of them before buying. These reviews
were all very positive and considered them an excellent value. Since I
use them in a small den (10 ' x 18') where floor space is at a
premium, I needed somethig small and unobtrusive. They have proven
perfect in that regard.
When I first auditioned them at my dealer I heard them in a
very large room using the ES-8 sub. Although impressive the very low
bass became destorted at very high volume levels. Because of this I
gave some thought to using the Take 5's with Energy's larger ES-12
subwoofer.
When I took delivery of my system my dealer loaned me both an
ES-8 and ES-12 sub. After extensive testing for a few days I actually
preffered the smaller ES-8 sub. It did not exhibit the tendecies to
break up as I had noticed in the larger room. Furthermore it seemed to
blend a little better with the small sattelites. The system can
provide good clean sound at volume levels way louder than I can
tolerate. (and my wife would attest to the fact that I like to play
things loud!)
After days of citical listening,I only noticed a deficiency in
the ES-8 on one occasion. In the opening scene of the movie "The Fifth
Element" there is a long segment of very low rumble which when played
on the ES-8 exhibited some rattle as the speaker driver was probably
bottoming out. Other than this one time, the Es-8 showed no
deficiency. I think in a larger room, the ES-12 may have proven
superior.
I am using the Denon AVR 3200 receiver. The main reason I
chose this is because of it having 6 channel inputs for future
expansion to DTS (or who knows what else). Am very happy with it.
Hope this helps.

I have heard the ES-8 subwoofer at a local AV dealer. I couldn't believe
how much bass output it had for a box so small, about the size of a medium
sized bookshelf speaker! I heard this awesome bass coming from the demo
room, which was about 40 feet from were I was standing. They were
demonstrating it with the small (really small) satelites by Energy (OK)
through laser disk and CD audio media. I can't say enough good things
about this sub (ES-8). The larger ES-10 and ES-12 have to be even
better. This was last year, and it was retailing for $299
Canadian...which is about $220 US.

I auditioned an ES-8 last week. I did extensive side-by-side
comparisons with a Klipsch KSW-50 and it kicked the Klipsch's ass.
Planning to put it in a fairly large room, however, I liked the ES-10
and ES-12 MUCH better. The store I visited was selling the ES-8 and
KSW-50 for $250, and the ES-10 for $350. I don't know about the other
models' prices. Also in that price range are many used subs
(particularly the Klipsch SW-8,10,12 series) that I like better,
however. I'm ordering a used Klipsch SW-8 this week. If the used unit
doesn't work, however, I'm going to get the ES-10. Bottom line: ES-8 is
great for small rooms and small wallets. Happy listening!
