I'm starting to look for a turntable that can handle 33 /13, 45, and 78
rpm for a home project to transfer a lot of old disk recordings to
digital format for subsequent transfer to CD (or even DVD?). I'm using a
1GHz/SuperDrive eMac (no additional software yet) to do the control &
digital processing work, so I would appreciate the group's
comments/experiences with similar projects.

You need a turnatable that will do 78's. That kind of restricts your
potential models. Try looking for a use Garrard 301 or 401.

Is is rather immaterial what computer you use, though you'll be hard-pressed
to 'control' (?!!!) your turnatable with it whatever flavour/speed/software.

Actually, if you are only restoring vinyl, you do not need 78 rpm.

Do you think you may have a significant number of 78s to restore?

If you do, you may want to consider getting a separate turntable for the
78s. You will at the least need two different cartridges, one (hi tracking
force, wide stylus) to play the 78s and the other (lo force, micro stylus)
to play LPs and 45s. Do you want to be switching cartridges back and
forth, aligning and adjusting the tracking all the time? That's pretty time
consuming.

I do realize that the setup for 78s will require a different stylus and
set of tracking parameters, but these disks will probably be processed
as a group or a set of groups, so I'm not to worried about the extra
setup time & effort for that. The main thing I would like to hear about
is how others have [successfully] done this, what kind of gear they
used, and the [Mac OS X] software they've used.
