I am in the process of buying a walkman so I have something to listen to
while I am school in San Marcos. However, the stations I want to pick
up are either in Austin(30 Miles) or San Antonio(45 Miles) away. Which
brand of walkman would provide me with the best reception of FM
stations? Any info would be appreciated.

My best consistent results have been with shirt-pocket radios manufactured
by Sangean of Taiwan. They are a premier manufacturer of shortwave
portables, and their AM/FM pocket radios benefit from the design
experience of larger models.

There are two current models - one with switchable speaker and a smaller
one without, as well as equivalent models from a previous generation. The
older "speaker" model is still sold by Radio Shack under their house
brand. It's AM/FM/TV and has grey buttons on front (as opposed to the
similar black button model manufactured in China which us crap).

in my experience the Aiwa models with manual tuning are good. There
used to be a company named Mura that made excellent radios, but
apparently they were priced out of the market. If you ever see a used
one, gtab it!

Note that you can add an external FM antenna to the headphone jack
with a little tinkering- that will help with almost any set. Using
headphones with a longer cord also helps, especially if you retune the
FM RF amp. Good luck!
