Since earbuds don't stay in my ears, I bought Sennheiser PMX100 Supra-
Aural Mini-Neckband Stereo Headphones. However, the headband tightly
surrounds my neck and the earpads press so hard on my ears that they
hurt.
Can you recommend other headphones?

No, but you could walk around with a boom box on your shoulder like people
used to do in the 80s. You'd be "retro."
From your description here, I assume that you don't have an average
size/shape head and ears. I think you need to go to a shop where they
will let you try some until you find a pair that suits.

Good advice.
As for specific models, try the Sennheiser PX-100. Not expensive, und sehr
gut.

Well, something isn't usual if ear buds fall out and phones hurt. When
you say ear buds, do you mean the sort that just rest inside the
pinna, or the sound excluding ones that push into the canal? They may
be what you need, although you will need to be extra vigilant for
traffic.

Also, Ultimate Ears will send you a kit for your ears to where you can
have custom-molded earbuds that would actually fit your ears properly.
Of course, they're DANG expensive.

I have a normally sized head and ears, but hats rarely fit me well, and some
headphones are just plain uncomfortable.
It seems to be more the shape than the size.

Uh, huhuhuhuhuhuh...
That's what *she* said.
Uh, huhuhuhuhuhuh...
(Did I just say that?)

If they push into the ear canal, they are earphones. If they just rest
inside the pinnae, they are earbuds.
I don't like earbuds either.

It's always best to try out a pair of headphones out before you buy
them, but unfortunately in most stores these days you can't actually
do that. If you need advice on what models are recommended, as well as
a good place to buy them, here's a site that sells almost only
headphones, and rates them as well: HeadRoom - http://www.headphone.com/

Many 'earbuds' these days come with a selection of different-sized silicone
rubber flanges to address this problem. Have you tried one of those ?

Ditto here.
But I *did* like "Airbud"
;)
