Answering a recent call for conversation on this topic...

I recorded a recital today by two sopranos with piano. The soloists stood
in the crook of the piano with the lid closed on a stage with two steps
down to the audience level. I placed microphones (Schoeps 41 super
cardioids) on the first step in a coincident pattern looking up. The mics
were roughly level with the ladies' thighs. Another pair (BLUE B7) sat
staring at the piano hammers from the bass side just a few inches above the
body of the instrument.

This arrangement gave me unusual control of the balance between the piano
and the singers.

The pair on the soloists captured their performance with great accuracy and
presence, but (as the pair was below the sounding board) captured mostly
the bass resonance of the piano. By EQing the bass, I can control the
amount of piano in the front mics.

The pair behind the piano caught mostly sparkle (and a few noisy page
turns). As the sopranos face away from the piano mics, they contribute
only reverberant sound. All the piano presence is here, added or omitted
as needed.

If anyone asks, I can post pictures and audio.
