gary,
I can give you some ideas, if you'll define "best" for me.

Lawson L47S
Lawson L47SH
Neumann M147
Rode NTV
Rode Classic
Schoeps M 222
Soundelux U99
Judging from newsgroup discussion, the three most popular on this list
would be:
Lawson L47MP
Neumann M147
Soundelux U99
I own the M147 and plan to buy the U99 very soon. After these two, if
the Lawson still fills a hole, I may consider it also.
Best? Please chile.

Probably. In fact, surely. What opinion would you like to get? We
have a special this week. Buy one, the three for free.

Hello Rick. The Lawson L47S and SH are FETs.
The Sound Room has tube mic called the VM100 for $849.00. Taylor says it's a
particularly good room mic, but I've never actually heard it.

I'd rather be recording.
Well, what are you recording, and why do you want a tube in it? How
do you work?

Ooops. My apologies.
BTW...
I was viewing the graphs for the Lawson L47MP on their web page and all three
patterns have a boost of some sort between 20 Hz & 1K.
The graph for the Neumann M147 (cardioid only) illustrates an attenuation up to
500 Hz and then flat to 1k. Kinda the opposite. (I do not claim to be a very good
graph reader or interpreter.)
Many comments concerning the M147 (including my own) has pegged it as having a
"robust" lower mid-range in spite of the graph. Would the Lawson be even more
pronounced in the lower mids than the Neumann? I do not recall seeing comments to
this effect though. Not having one to compare to the M147, I wonder what others'
experiences have been.
Usually in a dense rock mix (or even some folkie mixes) where there is a
convergence of frequencies at 200-300, from kick & toms, bass guitar, bass freqs
of most stringed instruments, and the lower registers of most voices, I routinely
attenuate EQ on the vocals at those freqs as well as other adjustments to sit
them down in the mix. Would the Lawson contribute to the build-up at this freq in
such a mix and/or present EQing problems in such a mix? I realize I can fit any
mic into any mix with enough tinkering...

Audition a Gefel M990, a cardioid only tube mic for around $1600.00
USd. Outstanding. You will be amazed that this mic doesn't cost over
$5000.00. Also, Gefel service is great.

Is the marketing department at Gefel working overtime?
It's funny but someone else told us that you couldn't tell
it apart from a mic costing $6K. So which is it? $5K, $6K
US dollars, Canadian Dollars, EuroDollars? Which mic?

Ahhh, much better. Before you jump on the tube mic thingy, consider a Coles
4038, an RCA 44 or 77, and the RTT VM100. The first three are ribbons, and the
last is a new russian tube mic which I think is well worth considering. Also the
Lomo M1 head on the Oktava 012 body is not bad either.
Okay, so you want a vocal mike. What _kind_ a vocal mike, for what kind
of vocals? And why necessarily a tube mike? What does the singer sound
like, and what do you want it to sound like?
The M-147 is not in the same league as the other two you're comparing
them to. I've ABd the 147 against the other mics on a couple of
occasions on both vocals and instruments, and it sounds too little if
you know what I mean. It does not have a good low end response and also
has a bump in the mids, which I don't care for.
You might want to check out Rode Classic, although the supply of that
mic is most of the time too noisy. I like the overall sound though.
Good luck.

Okay, so you want a mike that is intended for a single vocalist, so you
have a lot of freedom to pick something that is very optimized for your
own voice, rather than something that is good on a range of voices.
Find a studio in your area with a good mike cabinet. Call them up, tell
them what you want to do, and plunk down a couple hundred bucks for an
hour of studio time. Go in, take a DAT, and have them record you onto
every possible microphone they can find. Then go home and listen, and
you will know absolutely and for certain what your voice sounds like
through all those mikes.
It might seem like a lot of money, but it's nothing compared with the
cost of getting a microphone which, though a good mike, is the wrong mike
for your voice, and then having to get a replacement a couple years down
the road.

The Blueberry is not a tube mic.

If I remember correctly, the Hey Jude vocals were taped live on that
occasion
Paul.
A splendid time is guaranteed for all ...
a solidtube? naahhhh
My experience is that the Lawson doesnt have enough low mids. On a full
sounding voice it can be beautiful but often it's just too mid-heavy for me,
but then I like "warm".

I should have said that the mic is too heavy in the _upper mids_ at times for
my taste. I dont mean to give the impression that I dont like the mic, because
I do, just not on everything.

I heartily concur. I am loving the U99!
