The original file had about 2db headroom, but when I Bounced it back, it
was over-modulated and had horrible clipping.
As a check, I recorded a 1Kc/s tone at 10dB below peak, imported it into
a 16-bit Pro-Tools session and then Bounced it straight back again
without altering it in any way. The result was 3.56 dB louder.
What is going on?

something to do with mono vs stero .wav files maybe?
Mark
It was a single mono AIFF track and I exported it in mono..
I had previously suspected that something like this was happening a long
while ago, but then I was using multiple tracks so I assumed it was due
to the tracks adding. This time there were no other tracks and I made
no changes to the single track at all, it should have come back out
bit-for-bit accurate.
