Hi !

I'm a currently trying to set up a small home studio,
and I'm looking for sub $1200-a-pair decent amplified monitors.

I must say space is a concern... I will probably place those
monitors around 3/5 feet from the mixing desk.

I've seen very good reviews on the Genelec 1029A...
Does anybody have experience with them or advice
for another brand/model ?

Thanks a lot

We used them but as nearfield monitors. 3/5 feet from the desk is
pretty far away.

I don't like them. They aren't anywhere near as clean in the midrange
as the 1030 or 1031 speakers, and they have no low end. Go listen to
them and compare them with the 1031 just as an example.

on the frankfurt music fair I could listen to them. In my opinion the
103s1 have more low end but the 1030s sound clearer. But it was under bad
conditions......

Sorry... I think I got confused wrt US system (as opposed to metric)

Now that I think about it, it's closer to 70cm... Which is 2 feet, isn't it
?

Regarding space between speakers themselves, I think it should be around
3 feet.

I've used them at work for several years, and I really like them. But
you really need to buy the subwoofer that goes with them - so that
pushes your budget up by about $400.

Also - 5 feet is too far away for these monitors.
It sounds like you might be better off with the Mackies or the new
Yamaha 8-inch. Yes, I know they are physically bigger...but they will
sound better at that distance and you don't need to spend extra on a
sub.

yes that's much better. I hope the other respondees to this post read
that!

By the way, the 1029's are excellent for the size and price. Theyare of
course supposed to be used as nearfields w/ a computer or small setup.
I found them to be very accurate for their size, and I reccomend using a
subwoofer (the Genelec model that goes with the units) for accurate
bottom end.

I am curious about the 1030a's? Do you think those are decent for
say $800? I havent heard them in comparison to my Tannoy 8's.

I think they are handy. Small, fairly powerful, no outside amps and
crap, fairly accurate, fairly cheap. I have some in my home mini mix
room. But you HAVE to have the subwoofer if you plan on judging any
low end at all. They only go down to like 70hz without the sub. With
the sub down to 40hz or so. The room adjustment switches are also
handy if you need to place them near a wall. I keep mine off the
tabletop with some short table-top mic stands.

In that price range I highly recommend the KRK V8's. I haven't heard the
Genelec 1029's but if they sound anything like the JBL LSR25's ( which seem
to have a very similar design, at least externally ) you may not be happy
with them. ( The JBL's has impressive bass for such a small enclosure but
they sounded 'boxy' . . . )

The KRK V8's are similar in size to the Mackies and the new Yamaha's but I
think that they are more accurate and less hyped than either of those, plus
they cost a little less. The list price is $1249 a pair, I paid $1100 for a
pair of them at Guitar Center a couple months ago . . . .just recently I
looked at Zzounds and they have them for $979!! ;-(

YES I CAN YES I CAN YES I CAN!!!!! NANNY NANNY NANNY!!!! ;-p

Ok, now how about if you don't fully read the original post you can't make
an intelligent comment . . .much like yours. The first four lines of the
original post were:

>I'm a currently trying to set up a small home studio,
>and I'm looking for sub $1200-a-pair decent amplified monitors.
>I must say space is a concern... I will probably place those

So that is what I was responding to. Sure, I haven't heard the Genelecs,
that's why I mentioned it, but since I interpreted his post as not ONLY
wanting to know about the Genelecs, I offered what knowledge and opinions I
have on the subject.

I have a pair of 1029As that I use for portable monitors and I find
they have a very natural, full bodied midrange. In fact I enjoy
listening to them as much or more than most of the other monitors I've
owned including the 1031s and the Mackies . Its true they don't have
much low bass and won't play very loudly but its hard not to like 'em.
For their size, though, the volume they put out is remarkable.

What are their weaknesses? Well, they're not as bright as other
monitors. Not that they're dull sounding by any measure, its just
that you don't get that Nth degree of detail in the top end. If
you're searching for a monitor that will give you a microscopic look
at the upper frequencies these are not for you. The 1031's have more
detail up top, but to my ears the 1029's sound more musical and
natural in the critical midrange. Also the 1029's seem to be more
coherent in the mids. Another drawback is that the first couple of
mixes I did that sounded great on the 1029's, sounded a little thin on
other systems, which makes me think they're possibly a little too full
in the upper bass.

Hope this helps,
Bruce Barielle

I used to own a pair, and wasn't too impressed. They certainly do not have
the definition of their close competitors. At the moment, I'm using the
HR824, and I'm much happier. I've been told the Krk stuff is good as well.

I really like my KRK V8's ( John said piping up, as if he had foolishly just
walked into a bonfire with an open bucket of gas. ;-)
