Can anyone name a hit record or two in which a Shure SM 57 was
employed on the lead vocal? That is, a *studio recording* as opposed
to live recording. Thanks much,

JM

I believe Michael McDonald uses a 57 for his vocals. Can't confirm this
as fact, but that's what I've heard.

INXS "Kick"
U2 has done a lot with 57s and 58s.
Mick Jagger has done his share.

When it works, it works.

Many John Lennon recordings. He apparently had a favorite SM57 that was cracked.

Trent Reznor (NIN) used a 57 for voc on "The fragile"--mostly "noisy"
/"screamy" songs.

BTW many Beach Boys lead vocals were cut on a Shure 545

Supposdly Steven Tyler has recorded MOST of his stuff with a 57. In a
book I have, Jack Douglass tells of miking Tyler with a 57 (to hold
and focus on), while he aims a shotgun mic from several feet away to
get some of that condenser high-end. The two were combined to tape.

I've also read that Bjork favors a 57 for vocals, though I've also
seen this quoted as a 58, or a beta58.

Somewhere I heard that the vocals on Thriller were recorded on a 57

I believe I read the other day that many of Paul Rogers vocals were cut with
him in the control room, on a 57 with the monitors blaring. Let me go dig
up the article I was reading, hang on a sec....
Well, no luck. Someone hid the magazine from me. I think it was
"Musician".

I had heard that Matt Johnson did a The The record where everything
was recorded thru a 57, including lead vocals. I think it was the
'Dusk' album.

Madonna uses one on her preproduction and those tracks quite often stay
on the tape and are used in the final mix. She has one particular 57
that she likes a lot.

I have a vague memory that Jack Bruce used a 57 on some of the

This is interesting. I wonder how how this list might expand with the
inclusion of 58s, or perhaps Radio Shack HiBalls...

Here I quote an interview to Robbie Adams, an engineer to U2's Achtung
Baby an Zooropa. It appeared on Sound On Sound on 3/94.

VOCALS: Bono's vocals were largely recorded with an SM58 and
compressed with a Summit compressor. Adams: "Instead of using the
Summit, what we did on several of the tracks on Achtung Baby was to
record his vocals on tape with Dolby SR and play it back without Dolby
SR. It tightens up the vocal sound and gives it more brightness and
presence. It makes his voice sit really nicely in the mix and easier
to balance."

Cheers, Andrés
