The silver face with the green line is the front.
This is another of those 'experiment to find the best way' questions,
and that is, IMO, _always_ the bottom line. That said, I have had good
luck with a starting point of 6 or so inches away from the beater head
inside the drum, pointed at the beater. It is a pretty hot mic- if the
channel is clipping, and you have no way to turn down the gain or pad
the input, start experimenting with outside the drum mic placement. I
can't imagine there are many boards out there that won't accept the
output level of a 112- it's hot, but not extraordinarily so. Good luck!

That's true for a D112; a D12 has no green line, only a black side and
a silver side. The silver side is the 'front'.
And, as you stated, it's best to try it out and see what mike position
you like best.
