I'm moving and downsizing, so some great gear is going up for sale:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/130930110277

Thanks for having a look!

I have to admit, those look like cheapie computer
satellite speakers, but upon more research, it
appears they are serious monitors, albeit for a
very small room.

Yikes - that's smallest sub-woofer I've ever seen! Maybe a 'supra' woofer?

Here's a pic with people in it for scale:

I'm curious about the function of the mini grey attachment. Anyone?

Quote from the website above:
"The subwoofer conveniently features a
*remote volume control*
allowing adjustment of the entire sound system..."

I've been using 8040A's for several years and they are quite effective
as tracking and mixing monitors.

Yeah, it looks like with modern speaker engineering, you can't judge
a speaker by it's size anymore...

But the laws of physics still have some say in it. Low or loud is easy
enough, low and loud a little more difficult.

Trevor.

I found the low end on them a little restricted for my taste, but I am amazed
at how much cleaner the 8000-series monitors are compared with the 1030s and
1031s.

Physics haven't changed. You can have any two of low end extension,
high efficiency, and small size. You still can't have all three.
But a lot of what has happened is that efficiency has become far less
important.

That's true, but even ignoring efficiency it's still hard to get low bass
from a small speaker at high SPL (the fourth factor you forgot to mention)
Huge excusions and power handling from tiny speakers is just not possible,
not with normal cone speakers anyway.

Trevor.

That's true. High levels change everything. There have been some ingenious
high displacement transducers in the past couple decade, from the Servodrive
rotary subwoofer to the weird cylindrical thing from NHT, but none of them
seem to have caught on in a market where people want a lot of thump for little
money.
