I have heard nothing but GREAT things about the Genelecs, but my
partner today heard that the Audix is a contender!!

We need a set of great nearfields. Any advice out there??

Thanks

Tannoy System 8NFMII. Make sure that you get a good amp to go with them.
I use the genelecs every day, but prefer the Tannoys. The best for *me*
though is the HD-1.

I'm a little biased because we sell them, but I really like the 1A
monitors from Audix. I have heard very favorable comparisons of the 1A' to the
Genelecs. Not quite there, but lots cheaper...

You get what you pay for, if you have a $400 budget, don't expect a
$2k set of monitors. I had a $400 budget, bought a pair of Tannoy
PBM-8s which I like the sound of and find very useful. I can't say
either of those things for the NS-10Ms I also have. Given the chance
to make my purchases over again, I'd probably try something like the
new lower-end Dynaudio monitors or hunt up a bit more and look at
things like the KRK 7000s or the Tannoy NFM-8s. Unfortunately, I
can't reclaim the money I already spent, so I use what I have.

If your budget is higher then about $1000, I can't help you much.
I'm a low-budget kinda guy and I don't get to work with the good
stuff very often.

But I can give you one small bit of really good advice regarding
monitors. Don't put your NS-10s (or other monitors without
grillcloths) in easy reach of a three year old when you're not
looking. They really like pushing the dust caps on the woofers in.

Well friends, the jury is IN! We bought the self-powered Genelec 1030a
speakers and are indeed VERY happy with them.

We listened to the 1031a and felt they were a little harsh in the low
mids compared to the 1030a. Quite a bit more expensive too!

Had our first session/mixdown this past weekend and things came out
very nicely indeed. The cassette dubs sound very good on everything
we've tried listening to them on (from little boom boxes to average
consumer stereo to cheap car stereo).

They have done an excellent job of matching the bi-amplification to the
drivers. I see now what a benefit that is!

I'm definitely convinced. The 1030a's are "the shit!"

True, they are not cheap. I put up some tracks that I'd been working
on before we got them and heard quite a few things that I need to
change. They are a "very revealing" system!

Ha ha. Greg's right. Recently, my studio was broken into (but
*nothing* was stolen and the door was wide open during the day).
I was an hour away and my wife rushed over to the studio with our
2-1/2 year old girl to check it out (its in a commercial area).
I had the grill covers off of two 4x12 cabs for close micing and
my baby pushed in the dust caps of all *eight* spkrs! My first
impulse was to yell at her but heck, I should've been cleaned
out but there was all the stuff still there. So, I just laughed
b/c the spkrs still worked and I considered it an act of God that
it wasn't stripped to the bare walls. Besides, you can replace gear
but not kids... and I was able to repair the dust covers (it wasn't
easy) as well as score a new security system.

Genelec sucks your wallet. They're useless.
I own 1030a and sold it for only $500 to my friend.
I can't make a well balanced mix of it.
Now I'm switching between NS10m, KRK6000, tannoy system2,
and Spirit Absolute 2 monitors. They're all cost for an 1030.

I don't know about the 1030a, but I found the 1031's certainly not as good
sounding as the 1032's (I know, another price) and not only in the low
end!
I just want to say there are a lot of differences between the Genelecs.

Greetings,

I have found that the Genelecs reveal more of elements of your mix and
make you work a bit harder because of it. I get better mixes that hold up
better as a result. If you can't get a mix together on the Genelecs, I
would question your recording, not the speakers. I bought the 1031A's
after five year of working on Yamaha NS10s and Tannoy System 8s and I'm
not going back! The are well worth the $2800.

Genelec seems at our level to be the overwhelming choice of most audio
professionals. However, it is your ears that will be the final judge.

Maybe somebody knows more, but I was under the impression that the Audix
boxes weren't biamped. My favorite thing about my Genelecs is the control
I have over the sound, and being able to tilt the highs down 2db has been
a great help. Depending on the ear of who's been mixing and the room
they're working in, my boxes have been tweaked all over, but everyone
who's used them has raved. The highs are so clear and open--you hear all
the stuff you were missing on any other NS10 size speaker, so you mix a
lot less harshly in the mids. I've heard nothing but good things about
Audix stuff, though, so if you can find a pair of each and compare them it
would be best. Post your findings, please.

They aren't powered at all. I wondered why people were making a
comparison in this thread, except that both the Genelec and Audix
monitors have been praised for their good performance and decent
value.

Several people who use Genelecs at work have told me that they have
Audix 1A monitors at home. They've said that they are the closest monitors
soundwise to the Genelecs (not the same mind you <g>), for the bucks.

I can't find the model # just now, but I was pretty sure that Audix does
have a line of powered speakers.

I found it. The Powerhouse series are mostly smaller multimedia speakers
with the exception of the PH25, which is a powered version of the MM25.
As far as I know there are no powered versions of the Nile or Studio
boxes, so the top of the line is not available powered. I seem to be
using the word powered a little to often, but a good synonym just hasn't
occured to me. Powered. Powwwered. poweredpowered.....

We use 1031As and we love 'em. We also use Tannoy PBM 6.5s (Old style) in
all rooms, & Yamaha NS-10s for those who still like them.

If you remember that the Genelecs have they're own (bi) amps in them, they
are not overpriced.

I haven't heard the 1030s.

Try us... Audio By Design. Give me a snail mail address, and I'll send
out our brochure, detailing our entire line of speakers. I have been with
the company for almost a year. My genelecs have 10 months of dust on
them, but my AUDIO BY DESIGN Model 2 pro's are used daily.
