My question is if anyone knows of a way (or device) to read the data recorded
on a portable minidisc directly into a computer. I have Wavelab on my PC
and I would like to do some wavefile work on the audio, but the only way
to get sound out of the minidisc is with the analog line outs.
Thanks for any and all advice.

But that involves playing the recording back in real time, granted it's better
than analog out and re-AD'ing it, but I'm wondering about whether its possible
to just reading the data file directly?

It seems ironic that many new MD recorders comes packaged with a "PC-link"
device so you can digitally transfer all your illegally gotten MP3s onto
your disc, but god forbid someone should just want to transfer a homemade
recording of themeselves? Besides, it doesn't stop analog transfers, so
who are they kidding anyway. <grumpy now>

Given that MDs do not contain uncompressed audio, you'd require a
software Atrac decompressor as well as a MD data drive which allows
access to audio formatted media. As far as I know neither exist. The
closest you will soon be able to buy will be the Sony MZ-N1 portable,
which has an USB interface - but going by current knowledge, it seems to
work the wrong way around only, from computer to MD.
