In my semi-daily bounce from studio to studio I found myself, at the end of
this week, mixing in a project facility that had nothing but a rack full of ASHLEY
CL52E stereo compressors. I have never seen or used the unit until now.

Threshold was determined by input gain, makeup on the tail end. Ratio's
seemed to have to run a bit high but this was likely due to my being timid
of driving up the front end. Attack & release time seemed to perform well, no
audible artifacts from fast attack, etc. To me, the units were pretty transparent
but seemed to be a bit on the warm side, not bad really. Only having a small
amount of 'play' time, I didn't do too much experimenting, but I never picked up
any signs of pumping or self noise (even with my odd ratio's and gain structure).

At any rate, they served the purpose well this week and the fellow is selling
3 of the units. Before I recommend them, I'd like some more input from anyone
experienced with this unit.

Although it doesn't have all the bells & whistles, would it be equivalent to, or make
an acceptable replacement / addition - compression wise - for project studios that
have only 3630's or Behr MDX2100's ??? ............or am I just loosing it ?

Thanx,

David,

I have an SC50 and a CL50 - the mono versions. IMHO, get em if you can
get em cheap - they're a great unit. If you don't like em, I'll buy
them from you if the price is right. Fair price is around $125 each,
good price is $100 each, any less is a great price.

That is my lead guitar compressor of choice...I was getting laughed at
the other day...I had to do a guitar solo and recutt a bass...so I
brought a rack with an EAR 660 and an Ashley SC-50...the EAR was for the
bass...(cost wise they are at different ends of the spectrum).

You really have little or nothing to lose by adding the Ashley's to your
collection...so if they work for you...get them.

I don't know about their compressors, but I picked up their PQX572 stereo 7
band parametric e.q and am very pleased for my $600. It's quiet, well
built, looks great and works fantastic in my informal tests. I haven't
developed an ear for what high-end eq's should sound like, but this sounds
pretty good to me.

There is no "E" in the way they spell Ashly.

Cheers
Peter

The SC50 was one of the first compressors that I used when I started
recording in the '70s (that and dbx165s). Their cabinets were built like
brick shit-houses and I like the sound of them. If I had a chance to get
a couple, I would! They're well engineered and a fine addition to *any*
studio...(BTW, are they still in business?)

These are inexpensive boxes intended for PA work, but frankly they aren't
half bad and will beat the Alesis hands down. Offer the man $300 for the
set and see what happens. They're cheapies, but nice cheapies.

Damm it Fletcher! Now they'll go for $2500 (black-faced of course).

That's dark-blue faced for the vintage Ashly. <g> I've seen the SC-50 as
low as $75 for a working unit.
