Hello!
Are yous sure it's a processor?
I've been recording metal for 4 years now and I have never used any other
processors on crowl/hi vocals other than compressor and reverb :) and there
are some that do the same voice...

You should not even expose yourself to clowns like that at all. They
ridicule the art of Black Metal and have no place in it.

To (sort of) answer your question: no bands with self respect use any pitch
shifters or such on the vocals, other than for special effects. I remember
it was a lot of talk about this in the early 90's, concerning bands like
Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. Of course, it was all bullshit as far as I
know, they didn't use any pitch effects, and I seriously doubt that the
bands of today do it. Take it from someone who is heavily involved in the
scene...

None of the true black metal groups use any sort of pitch shifting. I've
heard the vocalist of Emperor was held by two bandmates, and punched
steadily in the stomach by the drummer to produce some crazy screams, and
the vocalist of some crazy swedish band set himself on fire and played with
knives and stuff, but other than that, there's no hocus-pocus besides an
insane voice.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I record a lot of distorted vox and
high pitched distorted vox and I find the best thing for it is a good old
Sansamp PSA-1. There is a whole lot you can do with it. But you also need the
voice to do that kind of thing. Oh, and stack two compressors together and
squash it.

That must be It of Abruptum you are talking about. I doubt that he set
himself on fire, but he utilized torture during the vocal sessions to
achieve the right authenticy. The Emperor story sound a little like a rumour
though, but you never know... The vocalist in our band has another trick to
get the right "gurlge" effect: vinegar. It builds up the right kind of slime
in the throat.
