I know it looks a little like a U87 but I don' think so.

It's a U87.

But who cares?

Come on "L2", don't you have some circuitry to design? :0)

It may or may not be a U87. However, the few times I've watched part of
his show on E! I've seen him reach up and grab the mic on the wire mesh
screen (not the shockmount) and move it around with no audible effects.
Makes me wonder what mic he REALLY is using.

Interesting. I've never seen the show, but that sounds kind of
suspicious. Could be that the producer said "you can't grab the mic
like that - it'll sound awful on the air", but Howard's the one who
makes the money and it probably looks pretty cool to the TV audience.

So they let him manhandle a dummy mic and actually pick him up with a
mic on a boom out of camera range. Could that be possible with the
way the show is shot? Probably had a bunch of U87's around that they
never use any more. Or maybe he has a lavalier installed
unobtrusively.

(are tape recorders in movies still always Nagras?)

Dunno. But I have talked about the Johnny Carson episode where someone
(Penn and Teller maybe?) spilled something on Johnny's lavalier and they
cut it and went to the SM33 on his desk. The difference in sound was
very striking, so I assume that the SM33 is there mostly as a prop.

Last recorder I saw in a film was Con-Air, and yes, it was a Nagra SN.
I am told that there is a Nagra III in the new Mission Impossible film
but I haven't seen it yet.

Now it really makes me wonder. To my eyes the mic is just a prop, a fake
U87. The advantages of having that big mic in front of his face are many
for Howard.

David Letterman also has a dummy mic on his desk. A guest banged into it
once when Dave was talking and not a sound was heard.

I wonder if no sound was heard because there's a separate mic for the E!
show? Perhaps his radio listeners heard some noise but television views
don't hear a peep.

Just a thought...

I've heard Howard Howard whine to his engineer that he will only use the U87.
Apparently, one needed maintenance and they tried to give him an
alternative. I think its real, his face is right in it all of the time.

Here in Canada we a have a low budget talkshow called "Open Mike with Mike
Bullard". The mic on his desk is also not live. Of course, this being a
low budget show, the dummy mic is also low budget: it looks to be a
Rode or a Stedman. At least Letterman has a classic RCA.

Hmmm... I've seen him tap on the mic and have heard it. They have SM-7s
for all the other folks which are definitely live mics so why wouldn't the
U87 be?

It's probably to cover up his big ole ugly beak.

I have seen times when he has hit the mic and it was heard. Probably depends
on how well the wireless(s) are working, probaly also witch mic was used when
Drew flashed Dave, she didn't have lav. on

I don't think that's it.... I watched it and he has that "right up on
the mic" sound to his voice - and if you watch him turn his head
ever-so-slightly away from the mic, the sound changes. I think he's
just pretty good at moving it without noise.
