The sound on the judges' and host mic's was absolutely horrible, and
not much better on the contestants.
It sounded like about a 15ms delay with inverted polarity.
Somebody really dropped the ball on that one.
I don't give a damn who wins, but it is kind of interesting to watch
what I think is very good talent.
I watch Idol in HD and hear it in 5.1 surround. I didn't notice
anything wrong with the sound last night. In fact, I think they
generally do a really great job with the audio. But again, I have no
idea what people hear with normal TV sound.

Maybe I'll ned to hook up the 5.1. It could be the rear channel signal
mixed in with the fronts on normal television doing this. I found it
annoying.
From reading previous threads on similar subjects, it seems that how
far down the transmitter chain from the original you are defines the
sound quality.

John.
MIght be that, but I"m wondering if the folks doing sound
for it might not be paying attention to mono, or other
compatability issues. IF they're listening in 5.1 are they
bothering to listen to a mono feed, or even stereo for that
matter to see what they're doing.
WOuldn't surprise me, but then, I don't watch it at all.

What about the sound at *The Wedding*? I think they made just about every
possible mistake. Besides abysmally high noise floors, there was a big lip
synch problem that eventually got fixed, a long outage at a critical point
on ABC, and feedback.
What wedding?
What I saw of it was OK straight off the BBC. (terrestrial digital)

Interesting how going straight to the BBC eliminated the little stretch of
feedback. Real magic you've got there! ;-)

I watched the Thursday night show and it didn't have the problems I
heard the night before. It may have been something added by the cable
or satellite feed.

Because of the nature of the show, they have to use quite a bit of active
noise reduction to eliminate feedback and cut down on stage noise within the
studio. A recent issue of MIX magazine goes into this in detail. I think
they're using gates on all the judge mikes and the host's microphone, as well
as the contestants' wireless lavs, and I also think there's some feedback EQ
notches going on.
If anything, I thought it sounded worse LAST year. It's actually gone up a
notch in terms of overall quality. At least they eliminated the problem of
judges banging the table or their desk mikes.

Can honestly say there's no danger of me being able to
criticize anything about American IDol, or a royal wedding,
as I could care less about either.

I presume you mean you couldn't care less, not could care less. But
with that revision, yes, I'm with you.

Any comment on the switch from Sennheiser to BLUE mics this year?

Thumbs ^^!
It also defines how much dynamic range compression your sound is
subject to. LOL!

Only in the studio. I think it was a promotional deal, similar to how
everybody (including Jimmy Iovine) is almost always photographed wearing Dr.
Dre headphones. Product placement.
On stage, they're using Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless handsets with MD 5235
dynamic cardioid capsules. Very expensive ($3500 each).
I'm not sure what the lavs are, but I suspect Sennheiser ME 105 cardioids to
help minimize feedback. The desk mikes for the judges look like Neumanns to
me.
Given the incredible complexity of the show, I'm amazed it sounds as good as
it does every week.
