I have an old Sennheiser MD413N microphone that someone gave me years
ago. I've been using it for voice over work and the results are
acceptable, but I don't know if I can get significantly better sound
with another mike.

I don't have access to other mikes for comparison - so my questions are:

1. Is my Sennheiser a good microphone?
2. Can I get a better one for less than US$100? (CAD GXL2200 for example)?

You won't know until you try. Every voice is different.

> I don't have access to other mikes for comparison

You should, if you're serious about this business. Go to a music store.
Take a trip.

Sure.

Maybe. Try it. Take a chance. Since you're obviously more than 500
miles from a music store or bedridden, you'll have to mail order. At
least you don't have to worry about Guitar Center's "We don't take
returns on microphone purchases" policy. Even their mail order
division, Musician's Friend, takes returns on everything. Pick
something, order it, try it out, and if you don't like it any better
than what you have now, return it.

Ty Ford does a lot of voice work and see seems to think very highly of
the Audio Technica AT2020. That might be a good first shot.

Thanks for the input. I'm in Taiwan, so I'm actually 5000 miles away
from a music store which is customer oriented. I'll take a look at the
Audio Technica.

Thanks again!

As I recall, it's a stage-grade cardioid mike. It was designed to compete
with SM-57-grade microphones. So it's nothing particularly special, and
it's no RE-20 or 421 at all.

No.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll just save up for a good mike...

Why? Why aren't you happy about with the 413? Just because there are
lots of better microphones doesn't mean you ought to get one.

AT2020 on eBay. $84.99 shipped. Not my auction. No affiliation. Just
trying to help.

I am slightly dissatisfied with the 413...a little edgy on the "s"
sounds and it just lacks "something" - maybe depth or warmth - that I
hear on some spoken voice recordings.

But overall it suits my purposes. If I get some extra cash I might go
shopping...

I have an MP4 video (with audio) describing the AT2020. It's in my on line
archive in the video folder.

Thanks for this info - this mike is getting some great reviews - I'll
check it out.

It is a bit sharp for that, it is designed to fit into a mix, not to
stand alone.

Depends on the mike.

It is an excellent tool it a rock and roll mike kit. It has the
disadvantage of not being very sturdy.

You can not ask the question quite like that, if you ask whether you can
get a better mic for voice over work, then the answer is "most
certainly", simply because something "warmer/fuller" is likely to be
more appropiate.

Senneheiser MD413s may have gotten rare, or rather, they always were.

They got the proximity effect compensation exactly right for use for vox
or on an instrument cabinet, but for speak at a bit more distance it is
thinnish sounding, and if close enough too sibilant. The Voice Over over
the printing house sounds on my site was made with one of the handful I
managed to get of the very last ones KinoVox had, one even was built
from spareparts.
