Continuing to monitor and record coyotes and other sounds. Right now,
the stray and feral cats in the area have become very vocal. I've
noticed this in the past when the weather gets cold. However, last
night, recorded something I haven't heard before:

What is this?

Thanks!

Sounds like heavily manipulated or processed approaching sirens.

Is this even real?

I don't know. It was recorded last night around 9 PM or so. At first I
thought a jet as some have a higher frequency like that, but the
frequency changed so abruptly and dropped off that it caused me to have
doubts.

Are you playing a prank on us? It sounds like
you time-stretched a sample of your coyotes.

You know what, I actually wish I was. I've been stumped today trying to
figure it out. My first thought was a drone, but, unless I'm mistaken,
they never sound like that. If it was a drone, it must have had IR
because it was night. Unfortunately, I wasn't monitoring at exactly
that time from home. Well, I was, but I was out in the other room. I
noted something and ran into the monitoring room to check, but it was
gone. If it ever happens again and I'm monitoring, out the door I will
go to see what the heck it is.

Now that's interesting. Hadn't thought of that one. I have been
thinking more along the lines of some sort of RFI, maybe caused by a
passing automobile. Perhaps a radio in the car interfering or something
else.

As an alternative to a distant loud object, perhaps this
is a very close, quiet object. It sounds a little like
two mosquitos hovering around the display lamp. Not exactly
like mosquitos, but perhaps a different set of insects.
The end of the sample could be them landing I guess,
although the last second or so sounds more like a truck
with squeaky breaks coming to a stop.

In the past, I'd have 'carted it up' and labeled it "Banshees". "Supernatural beings in Irish and other Celtic folklore whose mournful “keening,” or wailing screaming or lamentation, at night was believed to foretell the death of a member of the family of the person who heard the spirit." ... "keening" ... what a great and sorrowful word! I doubt it will happen again. If it does, try for pictures!

Some of these clips have a lot of silence, but there is sound there.
I don't suppose you're in an area that elk would roam. Some of
these are pretty close to what you're hearing, and if you listen
to the last second of your sample, it does sound like a vocal grunt.

After repeated listening and analyzing since posting it, I believe it to
be an aircraft. There's a certain jet that flies over that has a sound
resembling that. I rarely hear it, but I have heard it occasionally
before I started recording. My hope is to catch it again one time
during recording of course but, more importantly, to also be monitoring
live so I can step outside and determine the cause for sure.

** Not a chance.

The sound is heavily modulated, suggesting multiple sources with slightly differing pitches.
It also steadily falls in pitch.

Sounds mechanical.

My first thought was: an airplane
flying to the airport about 10 to 40 km to go.

I lived near Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) and I'm used to this sound.

That's what I finally concluded too, although I have yet to hear the
sound again. Since I also monitor live often, I hope to bolt out the
door and check the next time I hear it.
