How do I wire up a 5 pin DIN type mic cable to XLR?

I've got a couple of odd looking old telefunken microphones that have
this strange cable comming out of them with a funny 5 pin male connector
on the end. The connector is much smaller than an XLR and I think may be
properly called DIN.

I would like to use these with my normal XLR type pre-amps, but I'm not
at all sure how to connect them. So I'm looking for any information on
how I might go about converting the five pin output into a three pin
input.

One of the mics is a TD30 model, the other has lost its identifying
markings.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome.

If it has a locking ring, it's a tuchel connector, and you can get the
appropriate cable from the Sennheiser parts department, IF the mikes are
balanced.

Are the mikes balanced or unbalanced? The same connector was used for both.

There is no locking ring on the connector. The wire and connecter look
quite inexpensive-- a distincly lo-fi appearance.

I've tried to find some information about the TD30 on the net but have
been unable to dig up anything that tells me much about them. You ask if
the mics are balanced or not, the answer is that I don't know. I was kind
of hoping that someone on this group would be able to tell me that.

Did sennheiser take over telefunken?

So, get an ohmmeter and find out.

One pin is ground. It will have zero ohms between the case and that pin.

If it's unbalanced, there will be another pin with some continuity between
it and the ground pin and case, probably in the Kohm range.

If it's balanced, there will be two pins with continuity between them and
no continuity with ground.

No. Telefunken rebadged mikes from lots of sources. They sold very high
grade condenser mikes worth tens of thousands of dollars and $2 unbalanced
dynamics for childrens' toys. And everything in-between. They were sort
of like the German version of RCA.

Hit my website below & click to the microphone literature page. The scroll
down & click on the Bang & Olufsen BM-6 datasheet. It will show you the
most likely pinout for your Telefunken DIN connector.
