Hey folks, it's time for a fun thread! :)

Seriously, I'm just curious, how many of you here are in bands?
I'd like to know basically:

1) The name of the band

2) Where you're based in

3) Band personnel (instruments played, names optional)

4) The style of music

5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,
upcoming gigs, appearances are allowed here if you wish).

Thanks!
Elson

Craig Claiborne - bass
Noel Johnston - guitar
Me - vocals, keyboards, occasional sax
<currently vacant> - drums

We used to have a drummer, but he quit due to burnout after playing
too many freelance gigs. Oh well. BTW, we're still lookin' for a drummer.

>4) The style of music

Call it acid jazz, call it jazz funk, call it whatever. It's basically
a fusion of funk, jazz, old soul and hip hop. Plus other stuff.

My influences are Level 42, James Brown, the Brand New Heavies, Stevie
Wonder and Billy Joel, among others.

The bassist is into Level 42, Earth Wind & fire, Duran Duran, Stanley Clarke,
Chicago and The Style Council

The guitarist's influences include Mike Stern, Paul Jackson Jr, The Police,
Tribal Tech and John Scofield.

>5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
> already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

Uhhh...
We'd like to go for the deal thing, but we're not in a rush at the moment.
All of us are in college. We've yet to play our fist gig, which will be
sometime in July. As of now we're searching for a drummer and writing songs
and recording a 4-track demo.

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

We just finished recording a funky number called "Why?" So far, I've written
all the lyrics. In addition to the usual unrequited love songs, I also
write about honest songs about people and living in the city (hence the
band name). A lot of them have messages, but are not really partisan or
solidly ideological.

We do a few covers as well, such as Level 42's "Overtime" and our unofficial
theme song, "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells.

>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,
> upcoming gigs, appearances are allowed here if you wish).

We're looking for a drummer. I guess I've stressed that already.

We're gonna play at a party on July 4th. If we don't land a drummer by then
we will have to resort to kidnapping or extortion.

That is all for now...

After ten years of striving for a record deal, I'm getting back to discovering

A myriad of fragments, but from the seven completed songs, these are my

Through The Shattered Glass
Beneath The Skin

And just for fun, we've messed with the following covers:

Keep Yourself Alive - Queen

Nothing but home studio recording for awhile; Gordo decided to see if his

Austin, Texas

>3) Band personnel (instruments played, names optional)

Ted James - guitars
Robert Hembrook - bass
George Pestana - drums
Jenifer Sanders - vocals

>4) The style of music

We play mainly instrumental music, mostly surf. But we occasionally play
jazz, pop, and blues. Why does an instrumental band need a vocalist?
Basically, she sets a foundation tone which I play over. It makes for a
fuller sound. Eventually, we're going to move on to other things. We'd
like to play more jazzy, funky rock.

>5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
> already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

See above. We'll release our first single within the next year, either
independently or on a 7" label. If our music really takes off, then
we'll probably start shopping around for an independent label. Right
now, I work full time and everyone else goes to college, so it's not like
we're starving. We would, however, like to achieve some success with
this band.

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

I've written a few surf and jazz instrumentals that I really like. I'm
pretty proud of my arrangements of Dick Dale's "Miserlou" and our
"Western Surf Medley" which consists of "The Munsters," "Ghost Riders in
the Sky," and "Pipeline."

>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

Nothing right now. Just look for us if you're ever in Austin. We'll
probably be playing more in a month or so.

We practice in Woodland, Ca. (believe me this is truly
bum-fuck Egypt) where Chris lives. Jeff lives in
Sac'to, Ca., Ron and I live in Walnut Creek, Ca. The commute to
and from practice is kind of a drag, but the fun of playing is

Chris - *LEAD* guitar (Chris locked himself in his room when he

because he can rip!)

Ron - Rythmn guitar (Ron is the rythmn soul of the band. If
he's not there we fall apart because he holds us together.)

Jeff - Drums (Jeff is the classic urban drummer dude. He too
can just rip[!] and is the only working musician in the group.)

me - bass, singing, yelling, rapping, song writting and general
mayhem

Good question. We and our friends who've heard us are still
trying to figure that one out. How about aggressive progressive
but definately not grunge. It is kind of a blend of Adrian
Belew (Chris), Keith Richards (Ron), Jeff (there's no comparison
to him, he's simply a maniac), and Less Claypool (ok, so I'm
dreaming, but that's the fun of it all).

We do this mostly for fun. Like I said, Jeff is the only working
musician in the band which may explain his chops. For the rest
of us, it is the perfect fantasy twice a week.

We are going to buy some nice studio time (I've recorded us
on 8 tracks, but we want the full digital 64 this time) and just
have fun producing a couple of real songs. If we can sell the
songs, great. If we can't or won't, that's great too.

Of the 12 originals I like "Hey Jim" and "Boy of Eleven." As

The studio time was given to me as a gift. My wife was tired
of me walking around dreaming of doing it, so she just said
"go ahead and do it!" (Yes, I am one lucky S.O.B.) At any rate,
we do play clubs when we can, but have busy enough
schedules that we aren't about to play at 10:30pm on a
Tuesday night. Besides, Jeff can get us tag-along gigs with
his other band, so we are happy with that.

We're not really in it for the money (unless you happen to
work for the IRS, in which case we truly *are* in it for the
money:-). We play music because we would all probably
shrivel up and die a horrible death if we didn't play and create.
Besides our "day-jobs" do just fine in supporting our habbits.
However, if this recording magically lands us a contract (yeah,
right) none of us would turn it down (probably :-).

dks.

Trio - infrequent jamming, because of work schedules (north sea) we
haven't been able to gig.

RSHP - university band - for fun, university parties, talent contests,
etc. We play because we enjoy playing and having fun, and really get
to take off on the songs, may which we twist beyond recognition (like
"I just caled to say I love you" where I (bass) play country bass,
guitarist plays heavy metal style, and vocalist tries to take it all
straight - it's always great fun!)

It varies (hence, the name). My personal influences (this week) are
Erasure, Xymox, Patrick O'Hearn, Nine Inch Nails, Alan Parsons,
Ambrosia, Amy Grant, OMD, John Jarvis, Dave Grusin, Shotgun Messiah,
The Fixx, Mr. Mister, Planet P Project, The Re-Flex

We play whatever comes to mind. Sometimes it's Xymox meets Chicago.
Sometimes it's Alan Parsons does NIN. Whatever we feel like playing,
we play it. Some of it is even as mellow as a James Taylor song. ;-)

We do all of our own songs and have not done a cover of anyone else's

while.

No Plugs. We're a studio band, and don't do live gigs. That doesn't
say that won't, but our focus is to write, produce, record, and
distribute our music for others to enjoy.

Most of the recordings are ok. I usually like the current thing
we're working on - which at the moment is a wonderful 7/8 Greek
tune (Kalamatianos) which fits nicely on the bagpipe scale. Of
the recorded stuff, perhaps "Zito the Bubbleman", "Johnnie Cope",
"The Sleeping Tune", and "The Deil's awa' wi' the Exciseman".

There's a few US/Canada tour dates in August this year which
those of you not averse to bagpipes might enjoy. Also some gigs
in France, Holland, Wales, and of course the Edinburgh Festival.
I'll respond via email if anyone's interested.

We just started over a month ago, so our main goal is to keep it
afloat. Being an isolated town, the demand for live music is high, so
we've already got a steady gig when we are ready. OUr singers are

All of the above play for Contra dancing, which has nothing to do with
Nicaragua, but is a traditional dance form sometimes referred to as 'the
most fun you can have with your clothes on'. I also play Irish music, and
occasional Cajun gigs, and play guitar synth (in addition to other
instruments which actually produce the same note you play!).

>5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
> already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

'Deals' don't happen in our music. A monster hit is 10,000 copies, not
exactly appealing to record industry types, and we're glad of it, elitist
snobs that we are. Virtually everything is self-produced, which is true of
most of the music I find interesting. Of the above, 'Tripping Up Stairs'
has a recording released, although I have an 8-track digital setup, have
done several successful recordings with it, and I'm *nearly* ready to try to
record one of my own groups (gulp, the myth of self-production). 3 of the 4
bands above are fairly active, playing up and down the US east coast. Paid
gigs are fairly easy to come by, but pay is low and to my knowledge there's
only one band in the country that manages to make it full-time without any
other activities or a 2nd band to fill in the calendar. So subsidized fun
is the goal, I guess.

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

There *are* original tunes written in this genre, and I've written some,
but more admiration is given to skill in playing any tune that makes you
move well on the dance floor, and much of the skill is in improvisatory
arrangements by picking from the approximately 10,000 tunes in the
repertoire on the fly and doing wild stuff with them that matches somehow
with the dance being done.

>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

We call ourselves RINA BIJOU. It's a name. A fictional character who is the embodyment of a
particular sense of humor and our feelings about our music.

> 2) Where you're based in

Burlington, Vermont, USA

> 3) Band personnel (instruments played, names optional)

2 Guitars, Bass, Drums; everybody sings.

> 4) The style of music

We write all our own music and lyrics. The music brings together every influence of every member
of the band. We've all spent alot of time with rock, funk, bebop, African groove music, latin jazz, heavy
metal, hardcore and punk. Sometimes these come out simultaneously, and sometimes they are contrasted back
to back.
The lyrics tend to originate from free associations, certain themes such as the illuminati and
entymology, and words that just sound neat in rapid succession.
We can be loud. Occaisionally quiet cafes are nice and give us a chance to concentrate on the
playing, but the late night packed drunken rooms are definitely the most fun.

Short term is to get ourselves travelling out of Burlington on a much more regular basis. It
remains to be seen whether there are actually enough people who might enjoy us to make it worthwhile.

Sure. I Fully enjoy playing this music. We write with our own enjoyment being of equal
importance to the listener's.

The real problem here is excessive cross-posting, I think. This thread
is appropriate for most of the groups (like rec.music.makers.bass where
I'm reading it) and less so for others (rec.audio.pro). I've set
followups accordingly.

For the most part I think it's a reasonable thread, though, and you
should just kill the subject if you don't want to "slog through" the
messages (30 messages in three days isn't exactly an avalanche,
either). This is a trivial task with most news software.

In article <1994Jun15.1...@cs.ucla.edu> Greg Skinner,

As for point number one, I agree. Many here want to publish their music.
My own cynical view is that so many people are looking for recording
deals that one has to just really luck out to get one. There are
sooooooo many bands that couldn't play their way out of a paper bag but
have lucrative recording deals and radio air play anyway. Just take
"Beck" for example. I must say I like his "Loser" tune (mostly for its
novelty), but it is only one tune! The rest of his material cannot stand
on its own in my opinion.

As for the second point, I find this to be really comforting. You can go
just about anywhere and find someone to play music with. That's great!

dks.

Thats difficult to say. People who have mentioned Crowded House,

The whole project was actually started by the drummer. He needed some
studio-musician to record some of his songs. Last summer we recorded
some more. Great tunes, acually. All the others had played a played in
lots of different bands and was busy doing gigs and studio sessions.
Then we started to
think: Hey this is great songs, why don't we go for it.
So we did, every quitted their other bands, and started this band.
Now we have recorded about 5 songs, and we think we have something...
So in the autuum we are going for a record deal.

My band is named, for the time being, King's Ransom.

We are based in Saratoga Springs, NY, about 30 minutes north of
Albany.

The band consists of Henry Tilford Mortimer III on lead guitar,
Brooksie on vocals and rythm guitar, Dave Forziati on the kit, and
myself on bass.

We're kind of hard rock, jazz influenced kind of thing, though I
dislike categorizing any band

We are recording an album this summer, for solicitation purposes
(solicitation of a record deal, that is).

I like most of our songs, but I'm most proud of our wide range of
music. We have one particularly interesting song called Rout 85.
In live shows, we put Rush's "La Villa Strangiato" (is that how you
spell it?) in the middle of it. That goes over well with the
musician-types.

We welcome any other area bands that would like to share gigs, and
things like that.

We've been playing the college scene for nearly two years, and are
starting to get into the Boston club scene this summer. We just released a
demo CD, "gone", two months ago, with six originals. We've broken even on the
project, so we're fairly happy. We've begun to work with a small label here,
Metropolis Records, and plan on having a full-length CD out next spring.

Covers - all kinds of stuff we like... "Fool in the Rain" is one of our
best, and our Pearl Jam/Hendrix version of "Alive" really kicks... another
fave is "Roadhouse Blues + Voodoo Chile + On Broadway", complete with trombone
solo...

Well I'll post something... not sure what...

ADVANCE WARNING: This is long... sorry!

>Seriously, I'm just curious, how many of you here are in bands?
>I'd like to know basically:

>1) The name of the band

Not telling you. This name took me so long to find I don't want to waste it.
Sorry :) This isn't actually a band, but one day it may (hopefully) become
one...

>2) Where you're based in

London, England.

>3) Band personnel (instruments played, names optional)

Me. I play synths (badly!), I have a Roland Juno-106 and I'm contemplating
a 2nd synth (maybe a digital one next to add some variety, though I'm really
a big fan of analogue). I also have an Alesis HR-16 drum machine, though at
the moment I'm basically using that to keep time. If it ever became a proper
band I'd look for a drummer. I'm contemplating buying a bass guitar for the
sheer hell of it, too. I have a decent computer, which when I can afford a
soundcard I will use for Midi/sequencing and so on. Until then I'm a bit
stuck. My voice is probably at best patchy, so I'd probably stick (mainly)
to studio work. I can't immagine anyone else singing my songs - a lot of
them are pretty personal.

>4) The style of music

Sort of a mish-mash of everything I listen to, I suppose. Some of the songs
I've written more or less have to be guitar-based, which is a problem since
I'm not a guitarist. Synths are fine for some things but not everything.
Early stuff is very piano+vocal style (OK, I haven't recorded anything,
but the songs are written that way and I can't change them). I then went
through a phase of depressed random nonsense, which looking back actually
seems remarkably good. More recent songs have been in in similar style to
"Psycho Drift" of Shriekback's album _Sacred City_, ie, instrumentally
simple, gently rythmic stuff, with half-sung, half-spoken vocals very much
leading the songs.

>5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
> already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

I have about 7 albums worth of _good_ material amassed waiting for me to
have a bit of time & a bit of cash to get something recorded...

For now I want to build up my synth & PC setup, and concentrate on working
out arrangements for the music for some of my existing songs (its all in
my head, I'm just struggling to actually play it at the moment). I could do
with some means of recording stuff too. I'm constantly amazed at what some
bands _do_ achieve with computers & drum machines (and in _no_way_ do I
mean dance music), which is heartening. :)

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Most of the ones that are still on the cards... If anything ever comes of
this I plan to release songs in approximately chronological order, simply
because of the style changes in my songwriting. The first album (as planned)
still has 2 or 3 tracks I'm not totally happy with, theres enough spare
songs I could use but I don't want to ruin the continuity of later albums,
most of which have some sort of "concept". I probably wouldn't do covers,
except maybe the odd B-side.

Still possibly the best song I wrote is one called "On the sand", which is
based (loosely) on a Ray Bradbury story I read at school as a kid... the
song is about the thoughts flooding back to this guys head when he finds the
body of his girlfriend from his childhood, who disappeared without a trace
all those years ago. Not sure how true it is to the original story, but the
song really is beautiful (I know from the above it probably sounds really
morbid, but it isn't).

More recently I've been in a bit of a dry spell - averaging a song a month -
at best I manage more like 4 or 5 a week, though not all necessarily any
good :) Basically I'm very short of time at the moment due to work commitments.

>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,
> upcoming gigs, appearances are allowed here if you wish).

Not really. Thanks for listening :)

S> Bugger off! If you don't like it, don't read them, you twat!

being one of those overseas foreigners living in a faraway country, I
am not quite sure what the semantically correct comment to that
wording would be, but 'CUT THE CRAP AND BEHAVE' is what I can't really
find a polite wording for. A polite question is asked, and it is not
that misplaced and you certainly could have followed up in a more
relevant way.

S> Believe it or
S> not, other people other than the original poster are interested in the
S> replies,

I agree with you to the extent that this is not a real heavyweight
forum, so such a minor survey ought not to be that much of a problem.

S> and we're not all going to ask everyone to respond by mail to everyone who
S> wants to know..... so get a life, stop worrying about "protocols", and
S> select your threads more wisely....

However ... this is not a 'musicians applying for jobs' forum, and
personally my feeling about this is that a question to the effect of
'Does anybody mind _if_ we make a public survey' had been preferable.
Now ... I am new here, so I am not really sure if my understanding of
this forum is correct, but my impression is that it aims at
professionel recording technique rather than those noise-sources
(with all due respect) recorded.

Having 'fast-forwarded' past all the survey-stuff, I am somewhat
unsure what the survey definition actually was, but it does seem to
me that for a survey to be relevant to this forum a survey of sound
recordists might have been sligthly more on the mark. That of course
does depend on whether rec.audio.pro means what I read it to mean.

Additionally, as far as surveys go ... I was somewhat surprised to
see that the people responding did so in public, I would have thought
it more efficient to make a 'form' that people could fill out and
that could be automatically imported in a database-file one then
could ask to receive. All of that probably could be made to work more
or less without any human intervention.

All that said, ... well, it isn't that much mail, and it probably
subsides pretty soon .... but could we please at least have future
surveys here slightly related to this area's definition, still
assuming that I have understood said definition correctly.

> 4) The style of music

Fusion jazz-styled original tunes along with contemporary original
arrangements of traditional Christian songs (as well as leading
praise and worship choruses in Church settings)

> 5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you

We're five guys, all full-time involved in the computer field, yet
we all love music. Maybe, someday it could become financially feasible
to quit our day jobs, but in the meantime... we sure do have lots of
fun. After this summer, we're planning on completing a self-financed
album (cassette... possibly CD if we can swing it) to allow people
to take home our music and enjoy it there, but since we all have
families and kids (except for myself which I'm still single) it would
be hard to find the time to concentrate on the band full-time and really
push for national(?) recognition. Also, since our band plays primarily
for churches, prisons, Christian conferences [most recently Promise Keepers
here in Boise for 5000+ men in attendence], etc. our goals have been
to provide encouragement to the local area churches, as well as a musical
creative outlet away from our jobs.

> 6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

"It is well with my soul", "All creatures of our God and King",
"He is able", "Jesus, Your name...", "This is the day..."
Originals: "Love never stops", some others I can't recall at the moment.

> 7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,
> upcoming gigs, appearances are allowed here if you wish).

We're based in the Boise area, but are willing to travel
locally within 100 miles radius. If anyone would like to hear us
play or have us come provide music for a program, email me and I'll
get you out more detailed information.

Cheers,
Billyb (** Bouncer **)

ps. I now return everyone to the previously scheduled newsgroup:

For the moment we are studio-only (and part time at that, as the other guy
has musical interests which are all over the place) and on a just-for-fun
basis. We submitted a tape for the RMI #2 CD, BUT UNLESS SOME OF YOU OTHER

No covers. We haven't done that much really. We have four songs recorded
"well," three of which we like enough to put on our upcoming demo. Carnival
and C^3I are on our RMI submission, Outside The Law is the other.

This is always difficult...mostly alternative metal types, with
flavors from all over the spectrum (rock, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, etc)

Just for fun, mostly, but it's always fun to dream. :-)
We've recorded a few demos (write for info).

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

We have close to 30 originals, but we don't play all of them anymore.
My favorites: "Europeans"--a metal/jazz hybrid with a thrash bridge
"Not My Problem"--straight metal with an artsy bridge
"Lonely Mile"--straight metal, from soft to hard
"Talking on Glass"--bossa/grunge alternation on intro; main body
alternates between alternative pop and funk
"Our Tune De-tuned (pronounced R2D2)"--straght, very rhythmic
metal; a blast to play
"B for Bill"--instrumental; kind of mystical sound; plays with
a 4/4 and 6/8 relation
Also, many of our songs have a message about society or emotions.

>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

For anyone with World Wide Web access, do this:

http://www.ksu.edu/~ak

and look at the info on Carpet Burn. Some info is also available via
anonymous ftp to matt.ksu.ksu.edu.

CHECK THIS OUT!!

Anyone else who has info on their band on World Wide Web, send me a
note and I'll make a link to it--I'd like to make a page full of
links to people's bands (without any fee, like Adam Curry would
like to charge you). If you need help learning how to create the
information, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

(I was simply going to save all the followups to this thread, but there
are quite a few...I don't have quite *that* much room on disk. :-) )

Gee, we want to actually stay together for several years, grow as

it probably seems very ambitious.

: 6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums. Vocal duties currently shared by
guitarist and drummer, but really we'd like to have either a straight
vocalist, or a new drummer so that our current drummer could sing.

>4) The style of music

We rather loosely combine elements of metal, punk, and Anglo-Celtic
folk music. Hard to say how it will work out eventually since we've only
just started bringing original material together.

>5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you
> already have a deal? Do you do this just for the fun of it? Etc)

Originally we just got together to play a few covers (Hawkwind,
Blue Oyster Cult, and the Levellers) for a semi-private party. Along the
way, I was teaching the bass player how to play bass (he'd never played
anything before--and I never had any guitar lessons either, so it was quite
a trip!) and together we wrote a song just for the heck of it which I
thought was surprisingly good! So we've tried to put a few more tunes
together, and we figure we'll spend the summer rehersing to the point where
we might be able to record a demo and maybe open at a local club or
something. Since we're all pretty amateur, we're in this for fun, but
won't turn down a chance to make some wider noise either (in the extremely
unlikely chance that we get it!).

>>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Yeah, we do fairly good covers of Hawkwind's "Quark, Strangeness &
Charm", the Levellers' "Sell Out", and BOC's "Godzilla" :)
I also quite like some of our original songs: the one the bass
player and I wrote "This World's On Fire", one the keyboardist wrote
"Gotham", and a Scottish ballad text called "Lochinvar" that I came up with
a folk-metal tune for are our best and most complete works so far. There's
some other promising stuff in the works, and some stuff which was pretty
bad :) and got shelved.

>>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,
>> upcoming gigs, appearances are allowed here if you wish).

Yeah. Ossian's Ride. Remember that name, friends!

Seriously, I'd like to add one more thing. The one thing that
really pleases me about the group is the relative lack of ego-conflicts
that I've seen plague bands from megastars to little local acts no one has
ever heard of. No one steps on anyone elses toes, and it's nice being in a
creative situation which is fairly relaxed.

However, if anyone in the Boston area (preferably Cambridge
Somerville area) wants to drum for us, let me know :) Preferably college
or post-college age persons with either some drumming experience or
enthusiasm and a decent sense of rhythm. We try to get together at least
twice a week. Our current drummer would really rather be singing, and
that's our only current source of tension (pretty low level, too).

Cheers,
Carl

The Shepherd Express (the "alterntive weekly" here) called us "a wonderfully

We really are proud of our tape, titled "You've taken too much acid" and we do
a cover of Neil Diamond's "I am I Said" that would probably make him sick to
his stomach.

>
>7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

not for now, but, I've been reading lots of others' responses. So, Elson,
buddy, are you gonna compile the results? I wouldn't mind a copy. Especially
since we would probably get lumped as "alternative" and, in the words of the
Dead Milkmen "when alternative has run its course, the backlash is going to be
enormous" the fact remains that the best way to keep the music flowing is our
own community, instead of one run by warner bros. I know more people in bands
who've had more fun and had more satisfaction working with other bands through
the underground, tape-exchangin, gig-swapping, DIY circuit than the
back-stabbing route.

thanks!

All of our songs are original and I love them all, as well as the songs of my
previous bands (Syphillus War Beast, Gerbil Juice, Mrs. Goatee, Moosehead Cheese,
and The Psychic Lust Puppies (AKA the Lust Puppies) all names are copywrited but
we can loan them out to interested bands. I have moved quite a bit (thus the

the remaining members, but the rest are currently free, write me for info.

We are writing new material right now for both bands, but Thoughtful Dick's first
tape will be called "to Fly or Fall" and will be out at summers end (Maybe)
and the title basicly voices my opinions about music right now. Draven is not
planning anything for anouther few weeks.

To make interesting music? "We wuz just in it for the drugs and the
sex"? Who knows - I don't really, certainly drugs and sex have not come
my way because of it, but interesting music has.

Perhaps the best answer to this is "I HAD NO CHOICE!"

To play live every now and then but not more often than, say every two
months. To produce music for animations, multi-media productions and
possibly film or television. To produce a single on vinyl for DJ use
and possibly a CD based EP or album within the next year or two with
our own money and possibly sign on with an indie distributor.

All original material... Grind (mindless dance tune which satirizes
mindless dance tunes and mindless dancers), Fluid, Retaliation, Calls

real "slow" songs).

We'll be shopping our tunes around at local dance clubs in the next
few months, listen out for it (as if a dance club ever says who a song
is by). We also may be appearing with Eisley X again (another local
electronic band of a somewhat different bent) in the near future so
look for them.

Just for fun at the moment. I have a distribution deal with CMC. I've
contacted exactly one record label to date, Mute USA. Haven't heard anything
yet. More demo packages to go out soon. I currently have two cassette
albums available to the public, both through CMC, though I've been recording
since 1987. I haven't exactly been knocking myself out promoting myself,
I suppose.

>> 6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Hmmm....originals. Close Encounter, Running Yellows, One Little Star,
Precious Time, and Timing is Everything from _Chivalry_ from 1992. Dancing
On the Line, Just the Same, Send Me Into Heaven, and Don't Say Yes from
_Affection_and_Lust_ from 1993.

Covers....I don't do many covers. I've done three I think since I've started
recording. The one I like the most is a technoid cover of "Windmills of
Your Mind", which I've done for an upcoming project.

> 7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

An impartial review by Al Crawford of _Chivalry_ is in the Datta music
ftp site at ftp.uwp.edu in the reviews archive.

Albums, available through CMC, 1024 W. Willcox Ave, Peoria IL, 61604:
_Chivalry_ 1992 14 songs $2.50
_Affection_and_Lust_ 1993 13 songs $2.50

Upcoming releases:
_November_Songs_, due 11/1994, 14 songs
_Poplyfe_Krismus_Noiz_ EP, due 12/1994, 5 songs
_Amateur_on_the_Pro_Circuit_ double cassette retrospective 1987-94
due 8/1995, 28 songs

Both bands looking, but haveing fun anyways. :)

DE: I really like about all our stuff (orginal and covers).
MX: My favorite, "Take Yer Chances" is an orginal.

DE's favorite, most often place to play is Time Out in Anahiem, CA, USA
MX plays alot at The Electric Circus also in Anahiem.
I've been with this band for years (we play on and off). Had the
fortune of opening for bands like The Dickies, Agent Orange, The Weirdos
(three times! Once Flea played for em when we opened for em <G>),
Toy Dolls, Dread Zepplin, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Social Distortion.

What fun!

The guitar player is also in both bands; he runs an indie label we
record for. The label also releases stuff by his old band plus solo
projects by band members and friends. Actually, I officially quit
both bands a while ago but am on the just-released CD and still do
fill-ins with them. Currently cooking up a more rock-oriented project
with the guitarist. These bands are committed to being regionally
successful. The intent is not so much to have "stardom" but to be able
to secure regular, well paid gigs. For instance, doing corporate
functions, private parties, college shows, open air concerts, etc.
for big $$$ instead of endless low paying bar gigs.

>6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Three originals the Bones just released on a new CD; they represent the
direction the guitarist and I are heading in.

What do mean by "copywrited"? Unless US law changed recently, this has no
meaning. Names can not have copyright protection. You can get it trademarked,
but surely anyone who has gone through that relatively involved process would
not make the mistake of calling this "copywrited".

Anyhow, I suppose I'll answer the survey as long as I'm responding:

I play in several bands. I'll describe the most interesting of these, even
though we don't actually gig as this exact unit:

Name: The Hugh Ragin Collective
Based: Northern Colorado (Denver / Fort Collins)
Personel: - Hugh Ragin - trumpet
- Greg Carroll - vibraphone, marimba, percussion
- Marc Sabatella - piano
- Erik Turkman - bass
- Scott Gordon - drums
Style: adventurous jazz, mainstream with avant-garde leanings
Goals: release the recording we made last summer; tour next summer
(we all gig extensively in various combinations locally already)
Songs: - "Back To Saturn" (Erik Turkman): a Sun Ra tribute that is the theme
of the recording
- "Blue Honda a la Truck" (Marc Sabatella): neo-bop + modal + free

I could not find the original post, so I *might* wrong.
If the original poster was from Canada, then you would be wrong
since in Canada, bands names (eg. bands are considered businesses from
Day One in Canada) *CAN* be copywrited. It takes $400 CDN and
about 2 months (or the last I heard). If the poster was American then
you would be most certainly correct. Just thought I should
point that out if anyone was not already aware. Keep up the bands posts! :-)

Has anyone ever heard of MonkeyLand records? Are they are big scam?
My band is about to pay them $325 to be on a "compilation CD". My
band is completely unsigned and was approached with this offer before
the preson in question had heard us? It sounds very fishy (anytime
someone calls YOU and offers you something you didn't requested, it
sounds suspicious), and I don't want to be out $100. Has anyone
had a similar experience (specific would be VERY helpful)?

No goals... to have fun. We often incorporate 3D animations and video

Our first audio/video experience, edited totally on computers will be out

I would like to plug Utopia/Exist-Dance/Planet Q for their support. Come

I've not heard of Monkeyland but, for others who might be

Take this for what it's worth (I don't know who they
are or what they do):

Blind Records
PO Box 336
North Chili NY 14514

is accepting submissions for a CD compilation. THEY
claim it will be nationally released and will receive
national promotion through 200 magazines and 500 radio

If you think you might be interested, give 'em a call.
They want bios and tapes.

College Guitar Pop interrupted by occasional weirdness
and displays of rudimentary technical ability. Usually we
come up with a good, catchy pop song (think REM, Judybats,
happier U2) and then mess with it until it sounds a little
strange. Let's face it, most people have never heard a
wah-viola solo.

> >5) Band goals + career status (Are you looking for a record deal? Do you

We're recording a 5-song EP in September, and we're
going to hit the VA/NC/DC club circuit as hard as we can this
fall. We're all students at UVA, I'm in my 4th year, everybody
else in their 2nd, so I'm desparate to become famous before I
have to become a responsible adult. We'll probably shop our
demo around to indies; we already have quite a following here
at UVA, so we know we're accessible and good. Exposure's the
thing.

> >6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Crying (on our EP) -
We're watching shadows dance because the TV's broken
We're listening to creaking stairs
We know the clock's hands they haven't moved for hours
We can't begin to tell you how little we care

We falter in our footsteps when someone turns a light on
Not like we were going anywhere
We try to act as nonchalant as fate would let us
We can't begin to hide how much we really care

> >7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

Sorry about the mistake. All of our songs are copywrited (lyrics) and all my
previous work (poetry, etc had been copywritted so this led me to cludge the sentance)
But the band name, insignia, t-shirts, tape covers, and name are trademarked (I
though it was patented? aren't they the same?). It was all done by our recording
studio so I didn't know the semantics of it. I will look into it more, it was
something I had always taken for granted and shouldn't have. Now that I think about
it I should check to see that they did stuff right. It would be good to know exactly
who has rights in case we ever decide to go off on our own.

Anyway catch you later,

First off: I believe this is my first public post (Iv'e left a few
private messages), so bear with me.

Anyways, my band:

Name: Pulp

Where were based: Saratoga Springs, NY (near Albany)

Musicians: Josh Kaplan - Bass
Gordon A. Shaw III - Guitar
Tom Collins - Drums & Percussion

Type of Music: Instrumental music. Very original style. Weve been
compared to King Crimson - a comparison that I am very
proud of. Our band is in search of a new, untouched
genre, hopefully, we can make one up!

Best Songs: We don't play any covers, and, as an instrumental band, we
can give the songs any names we want. My two personal
favorites are:
An Anorexic Sumo Wrestler in a Ramen Noodle Factory
& The Teeth in the Jaws of the Mouth of the Beast who
guards the Gates to the Entrance to the Mountains
of Yor.

Goals: Our only real hope is to get a record deal. Our music, for
the most part, is unaccepted by any clubs (nobody can dance or
mosh to songs that shift between 11/8 and 5/4 every other measure)
But were doing what we can to gain a following by setting up
our own gigs (outdoor shows, etc...) Hopefully some record exec
will be visionary (or stupid) enough to sign us.

If you play in the Albany area, and are at all intersted, leave
me a reply in my mailbox, please. Keep on rockin in the free world!

Zachary, the word "copywrite" does not exist, at least not in the
dialect of the English language that I claim familiarty with. The
correct word is "copyright" as in "the right to copy". "copyright" is
a noun and there is now also a corresponding verb, "to copyright". A
copywriter is a person who writes the words the advertisements.

It's just for the fun, although we're looking for someone to produce our
next tape to get some more gigs.

> 6) Any songs (original or cover) you're proud of?

Our second demo tape featured some songs which helped us creating "our"
sound. One of them was "a strange day" by the cure which still gives me the
chills when we play it.

> 7) Anything else you'd like to mention - band plugs (album releases,

We're working on some songs for our next tape (perhaps it will be released
as a cd when someone wants to put some money in us... ). I think we will
plan some gigs at the end of the year (down here and in germany).

Just thought I'd warn that there is a (brilliant) UK band named Pulp, they've
been around for about 13 years and are finally getting quite big there (I'm
talking Top 20 singles...)

Good luck with your stuff... :o)

Cheers!

Let's see if this helps:

Patents cover inventive ideas relating to new processes, machines,
manufactures, compositions of matter, plants or designs.

Mental processes (ideas and abstract principles) are not patentable.

Copyright (note spelling) provides protection to authors of original
works including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, etc. Note,
computer software is also copyrightable. Copyright in a work generally
exists from the moment it appears in a fixed form, e.g., a book.

Ideas cannot be copyrighted, but an authors written views on an idea
can.

Trademarks are used to distinguish a business from another business.
The most famous example is probably Coca-Cola, with the golden arches
of McDonald's fast catching them up.

All three are used to protect the interests of the individual/company
involved. You infringe them at your peril: if you are found guilty,
you will have to pay.

If it all seems rather confusing to you, I suggest you try your
local library for some further information, and then seek out a
good lawyer who is knowledgeable in this field.

This is for a non-computing friend.

1. Name:

2. Where: Efland, NC

3. Who: Sasha Petrovich - clean vibraphone, vocals
Sergei Petrovich - distorted vibraphone, vocals
Conrad Hipp - guitar (12 string with G's, B's, & high E's removed)
Squirrel - guitar (like Conrad's), saz (electric), vocals
Chip Monk - moog organ, vocals
Sarah Rapp - moog organ, farfisa organ, guitar (like Squirrel's)
Ward - 5 string bass (tuned, low to high, D-E-A-D-G), guitar (same)
Erich Zann - bass, farfisa organ, guitar (same), bass clarinet
Lex the Yamaha Drum Machine - percussion

4. What: They sound low and droney. The vibraphones are run through
octave pedals, and one through a fuzzbox and Trubo Rat. Songs are
8-10 minutes long. Sasha & Sergei sing half in Russian, half in
English. Squirrel alternates between Turkish and English. They do one
Goats cover per show. They basically rock.

5. Songs: They are most proud of Squirrel's "American Taksim"; a song
Sasha and Sergei wrote that translates into "International
Commerce Drains My Constitution of Vigor" (sorry, no cyrillic on
my keyboard); and a group organ lullaby called "Vegan Farfisa"

6. They play in barns only because Squirrel and Chip are both epileptics
(they came up with the band idea at a camp for epileptics when they were
both 16) and are deathly afraid of encountering stray strobe lights. The
band has existed in its present form for 6 years, and range in age from 19
(Conrad) to 25 (Sergei & Sasha, who are identical twins). They have recorded
about 40 hours of songs in Sarah's studio, and have an album coming out in
December, as well as a quadruple 7-inch (vinyl) single in September.

I've noticed MANY band names nowadays are some derivative
of a food name:

lemonheads
red hot chili peppers
pearl jam (maybe the verb jam)
smashing pumpkins
pulp (fruit extract)

Why didn't they rename Lollapalooza to 'Vegatable Fest'?

Maybe. My college band was "Snack Chunk," named after a type of
pickle. One member used to be in a band called "Lasagna." Of
course, one of my favorite albums is "More Songs about Buildings and
Food."

You have to realize that so-called "alternative" music, no matter what
other say, is actually very much formula-based. The formula:

- guitarist, bassist, drummer
- singer with little or no vocal training and poor sense of pitch
- music with a progrssion of no more than four (4) chords
- obnoxiously distorted guitar
- pseudo-funk rhythms
- absolutlely no non-whites in the band (but one token minority is fine)
- flannel, flannel, flannel
- pretentious and/or non-sequitur lyrics
- you have to come from "Seattle."
- band name must include the name of a fruit, vegetable or comprise of a
single, monosyllabic word.

VOILA! YOU HAVE so-called "ALTERNATIVE" MUSIC!!!

^^^^^^^
The "bassists" (generally) in these bands are not what you should call a
true bassist...
A real bassist is sombody like, John Pattituci, or one along those
lines...
Bass players in rock (Alternative) music are simply rythem guitar players
in a lower octave...

I made the mistake of calling Rock music Alternative...
Forgive me that one..
there are many good Rock bands... not many good alternative ones though...
