Could someone please explain me what the difference between those three
'types' of outputs is and how they are used?
Also, when a synth for instance has an effects processor onboard, does
this also affect the choice to which output you will route the signal?
I really hope someone can give a learnfull explanation about this to
make this more comprehensible to me (and perhaps others)! Thanks in
advance for your time!
Kind Regards,
Luc van Hoye.
Hi, Luc
Direct=usually found on each channel on a mixer. This one allows a
direct feed from just one channel on the mixer.
Sub=a mix of selected channels. For instance, in a live mix, the drums
can be on one submix, the vocals on another, etc.
Main=Everything that is not muted.
Aux=This would be an extra set of outputs on a synth and some effect
units and is the effect output on most mixers.
Kind regards,

This is a very basic answer to your first question about the thre tyeps
of outputs. The example is a small console like a Mackie 8 Bus.
"Direct" output would mean an output from an input module, post fader,
pre mix or bus assignment, usually used for feeding a single track on a
multi-track machine "directly" from a given mic input: including an
level or EQ settings.
"Sub" output would mean an output that does have the mixed signals from
several input modules that are assigned to the "Sub" mix bus. In the
case of the Mackie example there are 8 "sub" mix busses that appear on
the console as "To Tape" outputs.
"Main" output would mean the final stereo or "2 Mix" output that would
include all the channel modules plus whatever effects are added. This
ouput [pair] would normally feed a 2 track or DAT recorder for the final
mix.
Different mixers and consoles call these outputs by different names, and
many do not have direct outputs at all, but most have some form of them.
Best wishes,
John Eldridge

OK, Luc,
Main output is where you route signal to stereo monitor(speakers) or
the deck you're using for mixdown. (Basic ; this can be different from
console to console.) But this is where the total, summed signal is
output.
Sub outs can function in several ways. As a send to a multi-trak rec.
...as a submix sent to main outs (Purpose? to get all the bckgnd. vox
on one fader for ex. to make it easier to bring their overall level up
or down w\out changing their relative levels.) Sub out assignment
switches are usually found on each ind. channel strip and most often
you have the choice whether or not to send their output to the main
output.
Direct outs send only that channel on the mixer where you patch them.
This is useful in multi-tracking (cutting a few amp stages between
input and recording deck) and also can be used for more creative
purposes,(play with it and you'll find ways you like using them).
Sorry this is a little vauge, but much of the way these are srtup
varies from mixer to mixer.
Hope this helps answer the basic question.
Have fun with it.

Actually, if anyone has any suggestions, please post them here.
I have exactly the same problem with my white faced odyssey.

hi,
first excuse my poor english..
i have an ARP ODISSEY but the people who sell it to me did cut
(disconect) all cv/trig/gatte outputs.
Now i dont know wich edges is who...perhaps you can help me if you heve
the schematics....and cause of what the guy modify, the keyboard is like
"looped",sounds never end, even modulating adsr parameters...
best regards.....
