Greetings all,

I have some money left in my production budget this year and thought about adding a new mic or two to our collection.

Currently, we don't have any ribbon mics...and I've often thought it would be a nice addition, if I can find one we can afford.

Is there anything out there between say $500---$1,000 that might be worth considering? Potential uses would likely include trumpet, trombone, etc. (I had a trombone player in our studio a while back & he let me use his personal ribbon mic....and while it sounded fabulous, it also costs around $3,500....not likely something we can afford at this time!)

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Try Royer. They make some very smooth ribbons - I really like the
R-101 (I don't know why they named it after a failed airship, but
there you go). Not sure I'd put a ribbon in front of something that a
lot of air is going to rush out of, though. Brilliant for strings.

Beyer M-260. Definitely a sleeper.

The Fat Head is more like a traditional RCA kind of sound, although very
inconsistent from unit to unit. Cheap, though, and useful.

You do have an RE-20 already, right? And a couple 441s? Not ribbons, but
things I'd use in similar applications.

You know, I never considered an RE-20 for brass! I sure do have a couple of those! I've tried 441's, but didn't care for them in such a situation. Of course, some of that could be the room....it's not very large and I sometimes struggle with placement--especially with instruments that require a little distance from the mic.

Thanks!

+1 for Hank's suggestion of the M160. Not only does it have a great sound
on brass, but the hyper-cardioid pattern solves a lot of isolation
problems in small rooms.

I've had an m160 for years. I tried it last on sax and chose a Schoeps cmc641
instead.

For Ribbon Mics, also try an AT4080. Not your grandfather's ribbon mic...A
review with samples is on my blog.

And then there's the Audio Technica AT4080. As or more sensitive than a C414.
Here's a review with links recorded in Blumlein here with two AT4080.
