so I'm hearing reports from people that google isn't displaying posts from other news servers and other news servers aren't displaying posts from google groups. which means we're being divided and conquered. I'm just wondering how true that is and then if so, which interface I should be using. I'm used to google groups and I like it- much better than thunderbird- but this would at least explain why I'm seeing so little signal these days on all the groups I like to read.....

input appreciated!

Well, I know we just got a whole slew of posts in the last hour or so that
were actually posted a few days ago. As I'm posting from an iPhone
newsreader right now, however, I couldn't tell you if they were Google
Groups or not. I *have* seen some issues with the Eternal-September service
over the last few days that seem to have resolved themselves.

I sure am getting a lot of spam from Google Groups. However, because
Google continues being the number one spam source on Usenet, a lot of servers
just don't accept traffic from them.

Sorry about that. There are literally hundreds of NNTP client newsreaders
out there. If you don't like Thunderbird, try another one.

Just about every server out there is more competently run than Google Groups.

Really?? Can you name some? I'm not aware of any popular Usenet news
services that reject all Google Groups messages.

I know US Department of Energy does... Sun's internal usenet server did as
well although now that they have been borged I don't know anymore.

The thing is, there are thousands of individual Usenet servers out there,
each run by individual admins, each run according to their individual site
rules. There are a lot fewer than there were a decade ago, but there are
still a lot.

Well, OK, but those are private servers, and I understand why a
business would make that kind of restriction. I was thinking of popular
commercial and public netnews services. I don't know that any have
categorically blocked Google Groups messages. Lots of them have spam
filters in place that manages to block much of the spam that originates
from Google.

I wouldn't be much interested in a service that blocked all of Google.
As much as I hate it, many of the groups I read are filled with people
whose posts originate there.

That's just cleanfeed. Cleanfeed cleans up 99% of the the spam (most of
which does originate from Google, but cleanfeed will remove even spam not
originating from Google). Just about everybody today runs cleanfeed or is
a hop or two away from a site that does.

If anything, I think that since cleanfeed became as effective as it is,
fewer sites are blocking google because they don't have to anymore.
