Development costs. When the single remaining PCI slot is removed from
motherboards, the price will come down some. But the facility you ask for is
present on many new motherboards, at very low cost.

I have yet to see one come with built in S/PDIF *in*. That's
all I care about. Anyway, I bought the computer, and I'm happy
with it. I'm using an old USB interface for now while I bide my
time. I can still capture to my HD-P2 in a pinch and transfer
to the computer through firewire. Why didn't they include the
ability for the HD-P2 to act like an audio interface the way the lowly
Zoom H2 does?

I did a check, and you're right.

Yet another question I can't answer :) Tobiah, I think external interfaces
have taken over, because it's not hard to handle a stereo SP/DIF, even over
USB.

If it takes as long, as with USB 2.0 interfaces, then get set for a
loooooooooooooong wait and dont expect anything for the next 2 years. The
joke is, that the first serious USB1 audio interfaces got into the market
around the time, when USB 2.0 became practically available. But the audio
manufacturers needed like 2 or 3 years to get their shit over to USB2.
Well, lets just hope, that it wont take too long. :-\
Umm...the S-PDIF standard has been around nearly as long as the IBM PC itself.
I think it came out in 1982.
Most of the early S-PDIF cards in the days before the PCI buss were
bidirectional... stuff lik the Zefiro ZA-1. But these days the main reason
why people want S-PDIF is to playback encoded surround audio with an outboard
dts or DD decoder, and they don't care about inputs.
So if you want a device with inputs, you're out of the cheap consumer commodity
range. Look at the M-Audio boxes.
