Hey, all. I'm looking for a set of low-end speakers, i.e., something
under $500, and someone suggested I check out speakers from a company
called RDL Acoustics. Has anyone ever heard these speakers? How do they
sound? Are they good for the money?

Feel free to post here so everyone else can check out the response. Thanks.

RDL Acoustics is the company of Roy Allison who was one of the key
people in the beginning of Acoustic Research and who has written
key papers published in the Audio Engineering Society Journal about
the effects of speaker placement upon the response excited in the
listening room.

I've never heard his present speakers, but anything done by Allison
is certainly worth checking out.

I haven't heard them either, even though they are just down the road from
me in in Bellingham, Mass. Speakers are inexpensive, which *might* be
indicative of the sound quality.... they start at $110 pair. Mail order is
800/227/0390. They also run a BBS (don't have number handy) with speaker
set up calculation software and other stuff.

I have heard the RDL speakers, and in fact owned a pair for 9 months a few
months back. The Black Gold Mini-Reference speakers were the ones that I had. I
really liked the speakers a lot- they had beautiful midrange quality, very good
bass for their size, and detailed treble. The only problems I found with them,
and these are minor quibbles, are that they were a bit bright at my close (4')
listening distance- a problem that would be solved in a more appropriate
setting. The other thing that wasn't quite perfect was that midbass resolution
didn't quite measure up to some ProAc Tablette III speakers that I auditioned
a few times. BUT, the RDL's are $173/pair and the Tabs are $800/pair. And the
Tabs have no bass to speak of. The RDL's also had very good imaging, BTW.

IMO, the RDL speakers are a really, really good value for the price you pay for
them. They have a 30 day refund policy, so you can try them against the other
cheap speakers (PSB, Paradigm) out there and compare for yourself. I think that
they are very competitive. I finally sold them because I wanted more bass
response... then, a month later, they came out with a matching sub :( . I am
happy with my NHT 2.3's, though, except for their low sensitivity.

I ran the RDL's with a fairly wide variety of equipment- a tube integrated amp,
several Dyna ST-70's, a single ended 4 Wpc amp, and a Naim NAIT 2.

I don't think you can really go wrong with them if you're looking for good small
speakers to audition. I am actually contemplating buying another pair for a
second system that I'm looking at putting together.

Take care,

In response to questions on RDL acoustics---I have a pair of RDL-FS-1
speakers, floor-standing, 8" woofer, 1" tweeter. Paid $580/pair. Detail
is excellent, and dispersion of highs is very wide. Work best when
positioned aas described by manufacturer. You can predict effects of
various other positions with their "bestplace" program for DOS (ugh!) or
Mac. Get it from their BBS at 508-966-5214.

I preferred these over Paradigm because of freedom from boom. Also
liked real cherry veneer cAbinets.

RDL Acoustics was founded by Roy Allison of Acoustic Research and
Allison Acoustics fame. He is one of the true pioneers in the
business. He was one of the original inventors (along with Edgar
Villchur) of the acoustic suspension loudspeaker. Note: Edgar is
also involved with the company.

They offer excellent products at a very competitive price (no dealer
markup) since they sell direct. If you live near Boston, they have a
showroom at the factory in Bellingham, MA where you can audition the
products. They are excellent value for the money.

Roy Allison died, aged 88, on March 1 this year.

Peter.
