The Polk RT-7 is their top of the line "bookshelf" speaker so it gets
their top of the line tweeter.

Just like the RT-20 & the RT-16 their top of the line floorstanders.

I would have to agree. They are too expensive to really be a great

Really? Could you quantify. Maybe I just don't listen well enough,
but they seem pretty good for music. Maybe the type of instrument
influences your comment. They seem to do very well at reproducing
classical guitar. Vocals also work well. The new KD Lang sounds
fantastic. I have not listened to TOO much classical through them
yet, but they seem to do a very good job of reproducing classical
piano.

: Still, I would consider them to be good, all-around speakers for most casual listening.

I have owned Polk speakers for 20 years and was happy with them, so I did
not do a lot of comparison shopping. It is easy for me to
believe that there are better speakers for serious music listening, but
these RT20s are way beyond good enough.

I picked up a pair of RT20Ps last week. They are completely and utterly fabulous.

I would agree that they are very good with guitar and vocals. I just
picked up the Indigo Girls live album, _1200 Curfews_, and it sounds
excellent. I was referring to their reproduction of the brass
instruments. Some of the richness and tonal qualities of these
instruments seem lost on my Polks. Of course, this could result from
the way that the recordings that I own were recorded.

I think it is tough to tell. I have the RT20s, and I went home last night
and listened to: Liszt, Vivaldi (four seasons), Strauss (Zarathustra), Bowie (Alien),
KD Lang (Drag), Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Pink Floyd, Sinead, Single Cell Orchestra,
Shona Lang and others.

There are big differences between this and my car stereo. Duh. My mb quarts
articulate some parts on Zarathustra better than the Polks, but I think part of
that is just that the space is so enclosed and the volume levels so high that
they have an advantage. There is a part just after the opening where some
violins play over a breathy cello, and I was not able to pick up the Cello
sound with the Polks.

In general, I think they were awesome on the whole range of music, but some
recordings pushed the orgasm meter harder. Some artists just seem to have
a better understanding of how to record a sound stage. The KD Lang album is
absolutely beautiful.

I was listening especially to the brass, because I suspected that might be where
the problem lies. But it all sounded pretty good to me. I particularly liked
the way the Polks articulated the Timpani in Zarathustra.

I found one input that really screwed them up, although it screwed up the old
Polks too. The Single Cell Orchestra album has one part where they are using
a complicated binary on/off function on a womans voice for techno-effect.
It sounds really cool on the car stereo, but the Polks were NOT happy with it.
They made a really annoying popping noise as the bass responded to the rapid on/off
in the input.

Another thing that is kind of odd is the vertical movement you can get in rapid
scale running in piano because of the height of the speakers. It is a neat effect,
but probably not intended by the recording and possibly annoying to purists.

I personally have no problem with these speakers at all, except for the fact that
I am not sure I have found the right adjustment for the subwoofer levels. The
fact that these are manual adjustments is a bit inconvenient, because obviously
the level may like to be different for different applications.

I guess the bottom line is that these speakers are too expensive, but they
sound really good to me in both home theater and music listening.

They may not be "bright enough" for some people.
