This is a list of recordings that has both good music and sound
quality. If you have had it with boring studio-musicians named Bob,
but still like good sound this may be the list for you.

Title: Afterglow

Female jazz vocals; songs by Jobim, E. Costello, B. Holiday, Renaud,
etc. including an original ("Paris Bossa"). Very good debut, great
voice and "backed by superb, empathetic ensemble of musicians".
Tinged with emotion, her renditions do not deviate much from the
classic jazz style, unlike Cassandra Wilson, another excellent
performer. Produced by Shirley Horn and Larry Willis.
Sound:
Agreeing with FI magazine, the most natural sound of female vocals
on CD yet. Soundstage and placement of musicians is superb.
Instruments sound very natural, just listen to the percussion on
tracks 2 and 4. Guess Mapleshade is doing things right, as follows :
Mastered by Bob Katz, live to two-track analog tape at 15 ips, etc.
Digitized on custm A/D converter at 5,645 samples per second.
Minimum miking and minimum-lenght cablings. Cables from Omega
Mikro, Audioquest, and Mapleshade. No mixing board, filtering,
compression, equalization, noise reduction, multitracking or
overdubbing.

Artist: Rita Coolidge
Title: Out of the Blues

Music:
Rita sings the Jazzy Blues. Nice selection of songs of yearning,
rendered by a sophisticated, natural and lush voice that can melt your
heart. Totally mesmerising! She should have done more of this music
than pops. Hopefully there will be more, now the genre is more in
fashion.
Sound:
Very good, although at one time Barbara Carroll's piano seems to
travel across the mikes. Rita's presence is so close to real and
distinct from the musical instruments. I'm using this as a test CD, for
vocal and instrument focus. The last 2 songs are good for bass
extension and transient tests.

Artist: Van Morrison
Title: Hard Nose The Highway

Van The Man - Well, this one is for all those out there who now
think Van is hip and "Days Like This" was a good record as we say in
Belfast "WISE UP" This one will take you way back when Van was
the Man. A 1973 recording when the voice was fresh and Van took
time to sing the lyrics. An excellent peice of work for a feel check out
the title track or "Purple Heather" - skip "Green" side two - where
did that come from anyway.
Sound:
Like all Van's official recording there is not much to complain about
well made engineered and produced by the man himself. For a 1973
recording it is excellent, clean and tight with a great line up of
musicians - 23 years later and Van has gone back to some of these
guys. David Hayes on bass can only mean one thing great bass -
listen to that bass - strings,horns,drums all playing together, all
serious about this. A must have record from one of the all time greats
and this, in the days before digital audio sound

Artist: John Stewart
Title: Punch The Big Guy

Maybe not as well known as "Oasis" but this is real music. Singer
songwriter Steward has something to say and he says it with some
very deep writing. Listen to tracks "Angels With Guns" "Botswanna"
or "Runaway Train" this will show you what he's about. If you are
into mindless ripe off stuff then this one is NOT for you, on the other
hand if you like modern songwriting with musicians that know how to
play - get a listen.
Sound:
My copy has no sleeve notes at all so don't know anything about the
line up of musicians,production or engineering which is a pity, so if
anyone out there can help on this one that would be great. This guy
has a voice like no one else, my recording is so good that his his voice
is in the room with you. Tight playing from people that really know
what they are doing, the sound is well seperated you can follow each
instrument.Backing vocals either Stewart himself or the girl singer/s
he uses are recorded so well, makeing them all part of the band and
not just something added at a later date. It appears to be on CD as
well, have not heard that recording, but his voice must suffer on CD
so don't be a mug get it on vinyl - check out your local second hand
record store.

Title: Proof Through The Night

Singer songwriter T-Bone Burnett gets help on this recording from
the likes of Ry Cooder,Mick Ronson,Richard Thompson,Pete
Townshend and others.Great voice this guy and the songs are well
written - listen to tracks "The Sixties" or "Baby Fall Down" well any
track really no duds on this recording.
Sound:
What can I say bad about this recording - absolutely nothing - the
production, recording engineers and pressing are all excellent. For the
best results try and find this one on vinyl pressed by Alsdorf, check
the run out groves to confirm that.If your Hi-Fi system can play tunes
and cope with whats going on in the mix you will enjoy this. Play the
track "The Sixties" at full wick and watch the plaster fall off your
listening room walls.

Early Motels 1979.A band that can play and a girl that can sing.If your
where into American New Wave then check this one out.The record is
worth having just for the track "Total Control."
Sound:
A well made piece of work, recording and engineering excellent. I
have not heard this on CD - but I would assume it's not a good as
the Black Vinyl version so a secondhand copy on vinyl would be
worth looking for.

Artist: Richard D. James - Aphex Twin
Title: I Care Because You Do

Music:
Richard D. James is a prodigy of the ambient/techno scene writing and
producing this CD. His sound is very fresh departure from the
standard "thump" of many of his contemporaries, rich in texture of
sound. The first listening was great offering a godd variety of styles.
However subsequent sessions reveled why i like this album so much,
so many layers of melodies and beats form a complex sound scape of
music. An excellent intro to the ambient/techno area.
Sound:
Nothing Special about the technical process aside from most of the
sounds are generated from custom equipment modified for the artists
tastes. Lot's o' steady rythim alongside classical instruments
provides a truly unique sound.

Artist: Michael Jackson
Title: HIStory Begins

Pop/Rock; Everyone knows this guy's music.
Sound:
I guess some audiophiles would cringe at this recommendation. But
the album was favorably reviewed in Stereophile, comes as 2 Gold
CDs, and best of all, is mastered by Bernie Grundman. I use this as a
test CD to show off the dynamics, detail, bass definition and speed,
and rhythm of my system to non-audiophiles who visit my home. This
CD makes them sit up and listen ! The remastered "Billie Jean" has a
very silent background, and an extremely dynamic beat that would be
enough to gain praise. On an improperly set-up system, "Earth Song"
and "You are not Alone" are real tests for mid-bass problems.
Another album worth mentioning is "Dangerous". The bass definition
and dynamics on the tracks are simply great. Again, mastered by
Bernie Grundman, using the "Quantum Range Recordingrocess".

Two guys, a clarinetist and acoustic guitarist, playing big band
favorites and their own tunes all with two instruments. Performance?
These guys have the music in them.
Sound:
I challenge Harry Pearson to tell me of a better recorded clarinet and
acoustic guitar on CD. Two acoustic instruments, two mikes, and
there they are performing in your livingroom. Sound great on a
boom-box and even better on a megabuck rig. The perfect demo disk
to move that flat-sounding preamp out the door!

Pop/Rock; Recorded just before break-up of Richard and Linda
Thompson; This performance conveys all the hurt both were feeling
with great effect. A real guitar virtuoso and songwriter, Richard is
complemented well by Linda's vocals. A classic rock album, and a
Stereophile R2D4 of 2 writers.
Sound:
RkoDisc AU20 20 Bit Mastering, 24 Kt Gold CD. Warm, detailed, and
full bass. Check out Rykodisc's other AU20 mastered CD, Planet
Drum, an excellent percussion recording.

Jazzy Blues; Songs by Ray Charles, Mercer-Arde, B. Holiday, etc.; I
was watching a movie ("White Man's Burden") and I noticed that
one of the actors had a somewhat hoarse but sweet voice and from
the credits I learned it was H. Belafonte. I thought that with a voice
like that, I bet he could really sing. He sure does ! Excellent
performance on this album, and I'm off to get his classic "Belafonte at
Carnegie Hall".
Sound:
24 Kt Gold using 20 Bit "High Definition" analog to digital converter.
Excellent recording sounding close to those from Mapleshade. And it
was recorded in 1958 !! Another quality transfer, similar to Mobile
Fidelity's "Folk Singer" by Muddy Waters. Of course, I guess the
LPs would sound superior, but for those who opted for CDs due to
convenience, this CD is well-recorded. Thanks to whoever sent me
the Acoustic Sounds catalog. I'll be looking through them for CDs I
can't get at the local shops.

This album fuses jazz, blues and bluegrass etc. It's wonderfully
original and an album you'll never tire of. There is a great cover of
'Lighter shade of pale'. For a fresh album which is likely to take you
by surprise this is a must.
Sound:
An execllent recording by Oliver Dicicco in the best Windham Hill
tradition. The levels of transparency and tonal realism make for an
enthralling listening session.

Music tracks from all the different Star Trek Movies, including sound
effects encoded in surround sound! All the music tracks were
produced by the renowned Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops
Orchestra. I'm not that much of a Star Trek fan but this music is some
of my favorite.
Sound:
Wonderful sound, done by Telarc...it should be. This CD was also
produced from 20-BIT masters made from Telarc's proprietary
20-BIT system. If the music tracks are not enough for ya, then you
even have some surround sound encoded sound effect tracks, most
memorable from some of the star trek episodes and movies. They are
Telarc's own version/reproduction of the effects, and will blow you out
of your seat, reaching down to 5 Hz on some infrasonic frequencies
My subs freak out! Be careful at high sound levels.

The guys formerley known as Kraft Werk have done it again. This
album is a lyrical, sometimes heavy, sometimes thrashy,
techno/electronic masterpeice. All i can say is that it is one of may
favorite albums of ANY genre.
Sound:
The Germans do know how to make music. This album has some
Jazzy aspects, psudo-rock and lots of well composed lyrical
electronic/keyboard work. The lyrics are great, and funny, just listen
to track 1, TV. It has a fun apect that keeps you interested and
listening to the music, not just the sound. if you liked Kraft Werk,
you'll love this, if you didn't like Kraft Werk, or any other
electronic/techno groups you heard before, you still might like it! give

very strange and very satisfying LP. The songs are great, the playing

Sound:
According to a review in "Scene", this is a new 4-track album mixed
to glorious MONO!!!! The sound is usually good, except on "Bonnie
Takes A Nap" and a live cover of the Stones' "Live With Me", which
sound like bootlegs.

Music:
Extremely talented (not to mention real sultry looking!) violinist who
plays with a youthful passion and a unique interpretation of violin
music as we know it. She blends violins with technology in what she
calls "techno-acoustic fusion" and it works well. The pieces and
works she plays can be labelled in a multiple of categories from pop to
techno to classical (although some strict classissists will balk at the
thought of this album as "classical"). Worth a listen at least. I've
gotten hooked. ;)
Sound:
Superb sound quality and editing. Bass tracks laid out nicely in the
background to complement Mae's violin playing. This recording
embraces you into the music somehow.

Music:
Classic Jazz trio, Arriale on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, Steve
Davis on drums. Includes renditions of "My Funny Valentine", "Alone
Together", "My One and Only Love". Stereophile made this one of
their "Records of the Month", and to roughly quote them, "she can be
compared to Bill Evans", another one of my favorite artists. Arriale
was chosen as the no. 1 pianist at the 1995 Great American Jazz
Piano Competition.
Sound:
On a good system, the sound is excellent with solid bass and drums.
Soundstage is just as good. I said good system since I first heard this
on a mid-fi system, and the sound was veiled, although the bass was
still solid.

Jazz vocals. Excellent renditions of classic songs like Robert
Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Hellhound on my Trail",
Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey". Wilson includes African elements in
this CD, in which Stereophile noted that she's giving tribute to her
Afro-American roots. Still better than her new CD "New Moon
Daughter", although the latter is also good.
Sound:
Produced by Craig Street, notable for big-sounding productions. The
sound on this CD is very clean, and the instruments all sound natural.
Check those drums on track 8 and 9. Crystal clear sound, and
dynamic. Her voice is also a real showcase, deep yet capable of I dare
say full- range.

I really am not sure where to classify this. I would guess pop/world
music. Dedicated to Jerry Garcia (and Hart's mother who taught him
to drum). The music is rhythmic, with smatterings of percussion.
Some tracks can be danced to actually. All tracks with vocals, and
even includes a choir
Sound:
HDCD disc that really gives justice to the arguments of HDCD
proponents. First time I heard this, the sound was stunning. Check
out "Where Love Goes", "Full Steam Ahead", "Down the Road". One
doesn't need golden ears to hear what HDCD does on this disc.
"Only the Strange Remain", my favorite track, features clean,
chest-pounding bass, excellent rhythm, and arrangement. Dynamic. I
don't know how it will sound on non-HDCD sources, though, since I
do listen through an HDCD processor.

Sound:
Excellent sound, with kick-butt drums and organs and a very dynamic
guitar, and no special audiophile recording technique, at least none
mentioned in the leaflet. His voice is smooth and deep, and blends
well with the instruments. HiFi New & Record Review (U.K.) made
this a recording of the month (K. Kessler ws one of the reviewers),
and it recently won an award as "Best Country Blues". Made in USA
is the CD to go for, since it looks like some from Germany are coming
into the market.

Sorry, can't say who the other artists are since the text is in Chinese.
Sound:
The best recording for "Midnight Sugar" yet that I have encountered.
The 24K Gold pressing leaves a warm and very dynamic sound. The
bass notes are really rounded and well-defined. The organs are really
dynamic and clean-sounding.

Title: Holst, The Planets Suite for large orchestra

Music:
Literally dozens of "Planets" recordings can be found, but this
relatively recent version by Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony
Orchestra breathes new life into this endearing suite. There are no
glaring faults to my ears, and every planet is no less than well-done;
however, I use this CD for "Mars, the Bringer of War" when creating
an "Ultimate Planets" composite tape. Dutoit conducts "Mars" with
ruthless ferocity, with ambient organ blasts, raucous but brilliant
trombones and trumpets, and meticulous articulation. Dutoit's "Mars"
perfectly captures the piece's portrayal of sheer violence and utter
POWER that other recordings, even the much-praised version by
Andre Previn and the London Symphony, seem to be lacking. The
climax, in which every instrument plays the rhythmic theme on G at
"ffff sfz", is the most stunning fragment of orchestral music I have
ever heard. It gives a feeling of total power.
Sound:
This is an extremely well-engineered DDD recording. The organ
images beautifully, resonating with a 3d quality from left to right. The
central string hymn in "Jupiter" makes my top ten list of the warmest
string recordings (the first being Ormandy's version of Barber's
"Adagio for Strings," still the best on vinyl).

"Re- mastered from original analogue and digital master tapes using

30ips, direct into the Prism Audio Systems DREAM 1 20-bit
Analogue to Digital Converter. Assembled using the Sonic Solutions
Editing System and Flat dithered to 16 bits using a further DREAM 1

this was recorded in 1964 . great soundstaging and the palpable
presence of astrud makes you wonder why they can't make them like
this anymore. considering the number of great efforts by small record
companies to faithfully reproduce the sound. this recording will make
you see where we want to go.

If you have the first DB album then you will like the second half of this
cd. The first half is much "heavier" with interesting sound effects
(drills, screams, stereo panning, etc.). Dave may or may not have
been in a group called "David and David" who almost had a hit in the
UK with a song called "welcome to the boom town" (sic). What's the
first DB album like? Kinda-man-with-guitar-American-stuff.
Second album is a much stronger criticism of the land of the free, home
of the brave (or is that the other way around? And what does it
matter?)

Produced by Bill Bottrell. Good stereo imaging. Bedtime Stories (first
album, not recommended here) was produced by the same guy who
did Faith No More's "Angel Dust" (which does have a pretty
interesting if slightly chaotic production).

abilities. You think that after 20-some trance/techno albums they
would get old, not true. This Album is just as creative and origonal as
the first, second, third, etc that these guys put out. even if you don't
like electronic/trance/techno/ambiant you might acualy like this
album..try it!
Sound:
The sound and creative use thereof on this album is spectacular! in
one transition what appears to be a rain sound is slowed untill it
becomes the synchopated beat for the next song! the use of high and
low, soft and hard and synth bass on this album are pure genious.
Samples are plentiful but tastefully used. I really like this album, and
the sound quality is of the type you get only from FFRR and digital
instruments. Enjoy, i do!

from-the-belly bass vocals makes this, without question, a Desert
Island recording.

Weird twisted alternative rock, almost rap at times. Guitars are
distorted and, well just plain weird. Some explicit lyrics, lots of
humour (listen carefully to track 8, Beercan). A range of tempo from
driving metal on MotherF***er to wacked-out lay-z jazz on
Whiskyclone Hotel City. Not an album for the feignt of heart, or ear
(see Comments on sound). Lots of fun, if you like it.
Sound:
This album has WEIRD and BASS written all over it. The drums are
sampled and octivized down to supper-low, the guitars are processed
and messed, the vocals are warped, some sampled. There is alot of
fake record pop and some stuff that sounds like it's supposed be tape
hiss, but when the chips are down the recording has astounding range
and deapth; almost scary bass clear highs, warped mid, and lots of
space. I think you'll like it.

This New Age/Jazz record is the logic follow-up of the album Socu by
the same Artist. It has that briljant sound again and beautifull
arrangements. It is 100 % digital but with a natural feel that a lot of
DDD recordings seem to mis! There are spectacular features for
Europes Guitarplayer nr. 1 Jan Akkerman and Tabla Player Ustad
Zamir Ahmed Khan. Percussion is played by Eddie Conard who gives
the record a energetic character with a lot of nice defined crispy
percussion sounds. Be sure to get this record in your collection.
Sound:
Engineer Rolf Breemer did a very good job on this one! A Hofex
Spectral exciter waas used during mixdown. Tannoy monitoring was
used. Coen Bais played a Kawai EX Concert Grand Piano. A
collection of fine microphones and cabling during recording sessions.
Coen also uses the Emulator IIIXP Sampler that offer rich sounds.
The bass you hear is acoustic and well played by Evert Woud. This
CD is highly recomended on sound quality and is a good example of
modern recording compared to a good taste.

This CD is very special. It features a 18 peace Big Band conducted by
Jerry van Rooyen. The arrangements are wonderfull. It gives a rich
sound to the recording. Soloists are very special. Features are Toon
Roos; Saxophone, Rob van Bavel; Piano, Ack van Rooijen;
Flugelhorn. The orchestra is very into the music. The fact that the old
Strayhorn Material is played makes this a must have for Ellington and
Strayhorn fans. In the USA the CD is availlable through Kokopelli
Records from New Mexico. In the Benelux the album is on Dutch
Jazzrecords distributed by Solo Music.
Sound:
The recording has a relaxed crispness. The Orchestra sounds very
much in control. Of cause they play together for a long time,and
Europes best musicians are involved. The mix is very tastefull and
pays 100% respect to the original 40's soundconcept but with the
technical approach of the 90's! Engineer Jurgen Verroen and producer
Dick Kuijs have done a great job! The used Grand Piano was a
Kawais a Kawai and gives an impressive but natural sound!

This is the original 1950's monaural studio recording of this classic
Britten opera, recorded several years after its premiere with some
original cast members, including Sir Peter Pears. It has been the
Ur-performance until the recent Chandos version released last year.
It is a psychologic thriller with great emphasis on the clarity of text
and characters' inner dialogues. The music is very accessible,
challenging but certainly not avant-garde.
Sound:
Why a monaural recording? What no digital? This recording has depth
and detail which defies its 40+ year studio age. It has been well
remastered. The orchestra is of a chamber size and extremely vivid.
The voice textures are very clearly defined. Despite the lack of a
"stage spread" there is no question of movement in the proscenium.
One comes away with a good sense of being there, much like the
early mono shaded dogs of RCA and Living Presence of Mercury done
in the same era. No gimmicks, just good original sound.

This record was recorded during two session in McFarlin Auditorium
(Located on the campus of Southern Methodist University) on
February 20th 1967. The four special ribbon microphones, designed by
Charles P. Fisher, were so disposed as to preserve the intergrity of
the stereophonic realtionship, and to avoid artificiality in the musical
balance. A specially developed constant-velocity recording curve was
employed for improved s/n ratio.

It is hard to believe that such a stunning sound comes from a
volunteer church choir. The sound of the upper voices is ethereal and
the choir under the direction of Robert Bell achieves a rich, beautiful
blend. The musical style of Willan is the where twentieth-century
church music should have gone. The music is rooted in tradition but in
uniquely modern configurations and harmonies. Track 18 (Rise up, my
love, my fair one) is a fine example of Willan's ability to blend the
contemporary idiom with western Catholicism.
Sound:
The recording was made in the church proper and this is nicely
captured on the recording. Good stereo imaging, depth, and contrast

This CD was recorded at two live sessions. Sound quality is that
good that you wouldn't think it's live. But the musical flow and the
noticable joy of all musicians involved can't be produced in a studio.

Jazz standards played in quite a conventional way. If it had been
recorded as most other such sessions it would have made an OK, but
not remarkable release.
Sound:
This is a good transfer of a recording that has been well known on LP.
The recording is made in a jazz club and the sound is extremly
revealing about what is happending both on and off stage. In fact it is
possible to follow parts of the conversations on the nearest tables
without having the music obscured. Small variations in level and tone
is clearly audible. When it comes to live sound and the illusion of
"being there" I don't know any other recording that comes close. It is
a bit like Mercury Living Presence from a jazz club.

Songs in Lappish(also called Sami, the language of the native
inhabitants in the north of Europe) mixed with jazz in a style similar
to Oregon and elements of rock. Mari Boine in a very intense and
inspired artist and has the strange ability to shout and wisper at the
same time. This is definately not elevator music and the listener will
hate or love it.
Sound:
The sound is a bit produced, but is still good enough to stand out from
most other recordings. Acoustic instruments are reproduced with
much detail and there is a lot of energy at the lower frequencies. In
fact on a system that don't reproduce the lower frequencies properly it
would be difficult to follow some of the melodies.

where it often has been used to show how natural a recording may be.
The transfer to CD is quite good and it has not been too "produced".
One clearly hear where and what the "instruments" are.

The Firebird is a ballet, but the music has so many images that no
visual stimulation is needed. The music is more based on sounds than
melodies and this makes the CD a spectacular ride.
Sound:
The recording is made in the 50s, but all that gives a clue about this is
some hiss that one tend to forget as soon as the music starts. One
really has the impression that the music is live and one may place
every instrument individually in the soundstage. To learn more about
Mercury Living Presence I would recommend the sampler "You are
there"(Mercury 442 541-2) that comes with an interesting booklet.
