I've owned SZ's for two years now, and in my opinion, they are one of
the best speakers under $1000. Bought mine while I was in LA for
$175. I've just recently read this months Audio magazine where they
review NHT's SuperOnes which is basically a larger SZ with a 6 inch
woofer. Reviewed by Corey Greenberg formerly of Stereophile who also
glowingly reviewed the SuperZero. If you're not a bass freak, these
NHT's could be what you're looking for.

If you only want to spend $300, a SZ and subwoofer combo is
completely ruled out. Why not try NHT's new SuperOne? It's basically a SZ
that goes about 30Hz deeper. Many people at Stereophile's HiFi show were
very impressed with this speaker, as was I. I think One Call in
Spokane, WA is having a special on them right now.
You could use the SZ for rear channel applications. They aren't designed
specifically for rear use, but some people have found them successful in
this application. Whatever you do, unless you have a good room for your
home theater, don't blow too much $$$ on the rear speakers. Even $1000
bipolars will sound like crap if you don't have the proper place to put
them. I had good luck with NHT's HDP-1 which goes for around $299, but I
probably could have gotten away with something cheaper.

Great purchase re: the SuperZeros. You MUST add a subwoofer, though.
Go
for the NHT SW1P for about $500. It's a powered (ie. active) subwoofer
and
it cooks with the superzeros. I know you're on a budget, but the
dynamic
range of the superzeros will simply not be sufficient. They are great
satellites, but you have got to match them with some bass, go with the
SW1P
for an excellent budget priced sub.
BTW, I'm using a pair of Rock Solid surrounds to match my SuperZero,
SW1P
combo, and I must admit....awesome!

I'm surprised that no has mentioned the new NHT SuperOnes. Just like
the SuperZeros w/bass. Not a huge amount, but do go down to 57Hz
rather than 85. They list at $350/pair but can be bought for about
$275.
Low extension of SZ
SZs have no bass below 85Hz, I said NO.(SZ shows steep drop below 80-85Hz)
But between 85Hz - 25KHz, very flat response, it's like heaven. In fact there
is upper bass (85Hz-150Hz), so you can hear some upper low frequency notes.
Powered subwoofer
I would first consider NHT's SW1P, matching powered subwoofer with SZs. If
you need a most bass for the buck in that league, check Paradigm PS-800($419,
MSRP). Yamaha's powered subwoofers(there are several) are not a bad choice for
a small dorm room($300 and over, not sure). Though some claim they lack power,
they have good extension in low bass. Also check Celestion CSW powered
subwoofer. Ca. $300~350 street price. Not so deep, but very musical.
Rear speakers
Try five(or four) SZs, which will give very good sound stage, and seamless
sound. If you have very tight budget, try one or two Atlantic technology's
cheapest surround speakers with dipolar design.(one is ok, two, better)

If you can't afford to spend that much on a sub, go with the NHT
SuperOnes for about $350. They don't have that much base, but they will
work well as a full range speaker until you can afford a subwoofer.
Low extension of SZ
I, too, live in CT. I purchased my NHT Superzeros at Lechmere in
Milford for $80 each during a sale they had this past March. Not sure
if they still carry NHT as I haven't seen them advertise it in some
time.
As I'm sure you've heard in this newsgroup, the higher frequencies *do*
sound great with the Superzeros, but some bass support is a must.
If Lechmere no longer carries NHT, try J&R Music world in NYC. They
cost $100-$110 range there, but I know they definitely still carry them.

just like to add that i am also using the superzeros, but with a
klipsh powered subwoofer. i totally enjoyed them.
I read it and learned more about Corey the ham than I ever cared
to know. I think he more or less liked the speakers but didn't
ever think he could learn to love them because there will never
be enough room for anyone but himself in his heart.
If you can't afford the sub, try the superones, the base is there. It
may not blow you away, but it sounds great, and your neighbors won't hate
you. Lechmere still carries NHT, though not the SupeOnes (at least not
in Poughkeepsie NY) I don't know about J+R, it's not listed in the
catalog, but they may have them.
