Has anybody heard the new EOSONE speakers they have on display at Best Buy
stores across the country?

They cost $2200/pair retail for the RSF-1000 towers with a built in subwoofer.
They sound good to me but I have never really shopped for speakers and have
to frame of reference from which to judge them.
no frame of reference from which to judge them.

What do you think of them? Are they worth the price? And would they make
a good speaker from which to build a Dolby AC-3 system upon? (I am thinking
of buying 4 of them at a discount).

Thanks,
Jason

I'll bet you *anything* that they are not worth $2200/pr. I'll find you
tons of other setups that will blow them away, and possibly for less
money. I paid about $1700 for my Velodyne F1500 and B&W 600i mains, and
those tower EOSONE's don't even come close.

And is it true that Best Buy employees are getting 75% off until mid
may? Well, at $250 each or so, they *might* be worth it. But I still
wouldn't bet money on it.

The fact is that Best Buy sells inferior products (for the money) in *every*
other department. Their computers are junk. Their receivers etc are
junk. And I'll bet their new fancy speakers are junk.

Just my opinion...

I can already see this message turning into a flame war......

Look, I'm not here to defend Best Buy. I just want to know if they are
decent speakers.

As for selling "junk".... Maybe Pioneers, Toshibas, Aiwa, Sony, etc....
and their models we carry, are not something you prefer. No, we don't sell
Faroudja line doublers, Runco high end equipment, Paradigm, orMcIntosh.

At the same time, we do carry some excellent products and I'm not ashamed of
working there. I work there part-time, the people there are great, and I
I'm not commissioned and I don't b.s. the customers. And, I feel not guilt
for recommending products like the Toshiba CX-35E70, M-751, or even the
Samsung TXC-2726 at $329 for a good 27" tv.

Different strokes, you know?

Anyways, has any audiophile heard the Eosones? How do they compare in your
opinion?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Jason

My father has bought all his electronics from Best Buy. Good components, TVs, and
speakers (for the money) CAN be had there. You just have to know before you go there
exactly what you want, and what the competition is. My personal experience with Best
Buy sales people is that they are friendly, and genuinely try to help, but usually not
very knowledgeable about the higher quality products. No implied insult here, Jason:
I haven't encountered you or your store yet, and the variance between summer and
Christmas employees is incredible within one store, let alone the differences between
individual stores.

The problem with trying to compare speakers at BB to other speakers, even my own, is
that they are not available for an in-home demo. So I cannot listen to them with my
own source material (they have all the electronics behind a glass wall here, and do
not allow people to adjust the system except for volume) and back-to-back demo testing
is out of hte question. The speaker listening area is about the size of the entire
ground floor of my parents house (60x30) and the speakers are arrayed along two walls,
with matching speakers about 10' apart, either floor-standing or on a shelf about 4'
from the floor. No chairs or any kind of seating. The background noise from the rest
of the store is loud enough to mask any subtle differences between speakers on
display.

I think that the Eosone speakers are decent, but for the money I'd go for a set of B&W
and a sub. Of course, I already have the B&Ws (610i and 600i) so I'm already down
that path...

As an employee (almost every business offers employee discounts, so there is no big
revelation here - you don't need to confirm/deny) you should be able to get a sizeable
discount. For $2200 you could almost get a pair of Dunlavy Audio Labs SC-II ($2500)
that would make the eosones look like total crap except for low bass. You could get a
pair of SC-I for $1000 and buy a midpriced sub, and get _much_ better imaging and
higher resale value (you'd move to the SC-III I bet) for your investment.

If you can get them for <<$1000, they are probably a decent buy.

Best Buy is doing what Sears does with B*s*: positioning a decent set of speakers as
the "top of the line" within their store, and charging a premium for the speakers
because they are the best in the store. If people only shop at BB, they never realize
what the competition is, and are happy to buy the best available product for what
seems like a reasonable price.

As far as the overall attitude of BB towards consumers (_NOT_ a comment on employees
at the floor level) I think that people need to realize that BB is very effective at
separating fools from their money. From confirmed cases of bait-and-switch to the
silly and deceptive practice of pricing speakers each, when they are only sold as
pairs, the whole aura is "Come on in, trust us, you'll like _these_..."

At one point, they sold Hafler, Onkyo Integra, and the higher-end Infinity speakers.
The demo wall in the speaker room held a good selection of mid-fi components, which I
would have been interested in if I had the money to buy at the time. I'm past that
point now, and my interest in them is now limited to 25"-40" TVs, my next big
purchase.

The fact is that Best Buy is in trouble with stock holders, they run the
lowest margin in the industry. They produce huge gross sales amounts
but have one of the worst if not the worst nets in retailing.

They took on these speakers to improve net profit, so yes they are
probally way overpriced. That information came directly from a manager
in Des Moines. In a known trade publication it is common knowledge that
the "concept" marketing strategy they employ is based on margins of less
than 20%, if employees can have these for 75% off list then it looks
like Best Buy has become the largest "white van" dealer in the country,
minus the wheels. I still haven't heard these but if the above is true
I don't want to waste my time, especially with having to deal with
the rejects who work there.

Who could tell?

After seeing a full-page ad in one of the audio rags, and noting that the
local Best Buy had these, I thought I'd at least look at them the next
time I dropped in to pick up a couple of CDs.

The environment is far from what would be desirable for any serious
audition. For one, the ambient noise level was so high that you could
forget about hearing anything subtle in the music. There was nothing to
sit on, so the only way to get even close to the listening level was to
squat and listen. There was this huge video thing on a stand in between
the pairs of speakers - this HAS to do something (not good!) to the
imaging. There were three pairs of speakers all packed nicely together,
L and R flanking the video thing - again, hardly an ideal setup. I
looked at the backs of the speakers and saw the speaker "wire" - it
looked like a twisted pair of telephone wires! Best Buy sells 12ga
Monster cable - couldn't they have at least used this? The front-end
electronics were all of unknown origin and quality. Ditto for the music.

Maybe these have potential, but there are many fine speakers in the
$2000/pair price range - and quite a few for even less money.

At this price, or for far less, there are lots of great speakers
available, and you owe it to yourself to at least compare some
good speakers at a good audio store. Loof for a couple of stores
that carry the brands raved about here: B&W, Energy, NHT,
Paradigm, Definitive, etc. And let them show you some speakers
comperable in price to the discounted price of these other
speakers. Then decide. Don't buy based on a percentage discount
only. I haven't heard these, but I have found you can do far
better dollar for dollar at an audio store even if you are just
spending $200 Pair, brands like NHT or PSB have speakers in that
price range. Do check it out, the decide for yourself.

I work at a Best Buy in Dayton, Oh. I would agree that the stuff we carry
is not for the audiophile community - it is for the average consumer who
has no idea what a DAC is or who think that Bose is the best speaker
company in existance. Having said that, for the people who come through
these doors - the Eosone line is the best sounding speaker we carry. Yes
it is true that we were offerred a 75% discount on two particular models
through Sat the 11th good for audio employees only. That made the RSF
1000 go from 2200/pr to 550/pr and the 6 piece sub/sat system go from 1299
to 325. I don't want to argue whether or not they can hold their own with
Paradigm or NHT, but at that price and the quality I heard from these
speakers I didn't mind parting with 325! Just a bit of info for you, Arnie
Nuddell founded this company as a way to make some of his Genesis
technology available to the masses. (Obviously profit was a motive as
well) As far as someone actually spending 2200 on these, well ... I would
encourage them to shop around before dropping that much cash. To people
who come in shopping for Bose, I do think the Eosone Sub/sat system is an
improvement over them w/out spending much more. Just my .02
