I was wondering how the Polk LS70 or the LS90 compares to
other speakers such as Thiel, Vandersteen, Mirage or Hales. I
would appreciate a very detailed description regarding the
Polk speakers as well as the other speakers aformentioned.

I appreciate your response and respect your opinion, but I am not sure
whose response you are responding to. I haven't made any comparisons,
instead was simply asking how they compared. I do not have much time to
audition these speakers not to mention my limited knowledge on this
matter. Furthermore, I noticed that there is no one place I can go to
to compare all these speakers on a side by side basis. I was hoping to
get an "expert" opinion from someone who has auditioned a majority of
these speakers and could describe the general sound quality of these
speakers as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each. Right now I
have a pair of Polk S10s which I think are fine sounding but want to
upgrade because I just bought some expensive electronics and I don't
think that a pair of $500 speakers (regardless of brand) could do
justice to them. I naturally thought that I should upgrade the the LS70
or the LS90 but wanted further input. I hope there are other people who
can spend a few minutes on the internet and back up their opinions in
detail. I posted another message in this newsgroup and really hope that
someone can give me some real answers.

Thanks,

Larry

Let his own ears answer his own question. He will do himself a big favor
getting rid of his Polks.

Lawrence,

For a little less money, get a pair of KEF Q-series speakers. The KEF Q50
I won sounds as good as the LS90 but doesn't cost a fortune like the LS90
<g>.

Let's compare fortunes to fortunes here. How much are the KEF Q50s and
what is in them? My Polk LS90s (rosewood finish) were $1100 and they have
four 6 inch cones and one tweeter.

IMHO there are speakers with one 6 inch cone and tweeter that sound
a lot better than the Polk LS90. And quite a few with two 6 inch cones
and tweeter. And many with larger than 6 inch drivers. And even speakers
with no cones (planars).

# of drivers doesn't necessarily make a speaker better. Check out the
bose 901's if you're not convinced.

I'll also note that I always considered the LS90 to be boomy/undefined
in bass, but that may very well be the two stores I listened to them in
or the electronics used with them rather than the speakers themselves.
(though the electronics sounded fine for a pair of NHT 2.5's...)

whats all this talk about price. Only listening in your room with your
equipment and your own ears can one properly choose a speaker. Polks have been
known for a long time to be more on marketing than sound for the dollars you
pay. Kef is abit more esosteric, but for 1,100 bucks, Thiel and Vandersteen
should deserve a listen. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got the swing.

What the hell are you people trying to tell him. We really need to know
what type of music he listens to most.
#2 The Polk LS series was a major failure for polk. That is why they no
longer manufacture them. Why? I believe its the Mexico Connection. Will the
new speakers be used for surround? Does he own a sub-woofer ? Lets not
prejudge our own brand preferences concerning what will work best for
someone else. everyones ears prefer different sounds. Just like the other
brands he mentioned all have their advantages and disadvantages. Just
think SPL vs. Amp output.

How the speaker sounds is more important than what is in it. The overall
construction techniques and the quality of the drivers is far more important
than how many and what size drivers there are. I have not heard either of the
models discussed here, but suspect that the KEF would be the better sounding
speaker.

Right on, Ben!

Polks, like Bose, never sounded good!
