Probably, he should charge more for them.

Caveat emptor...

In a 1974 audio review of the AR3-A the author (Guy
Gardner) wrote “... it just can’t stand the gaff of
competition.” Also, “For one thing, the ARs (except for
the LST) typically have a sort of distant and removed
quality, as if the sound were originating somewhere
behind the speaker. This is frankly most disturbing when
we’re listening to singers, solo piano or some such
sound that lies predominantly in the mid-frequencies.”

1974 MSRP $269.00 average discount price $178.20 each.

It's up to each individual to decide whether he likes the speakers.
Obviously, if someone agrees with Mr. Gardner, he should choose something
else.
On the other hand, if he disagrees with Mr. Gardner, then Mr. Gardner's
opinion is irrelevant
The particular voicing of these speakers has it's adherents, of which I am
one. I am very devoted to my NEAR 50m's, which have a similar character.

Adusted for inflation, that would be about $600 each.

"Drescherdumpster" has been scamming this kind of dumpster junk out of his
garage for quite a while. Compare his list of "inventory" now with a year
ago, and you'll see your analysis is correct. None of this junk is going
anywhere.

The AR-3 and AR-3a are "classic" speakers. They were the last of a line of
speakers which represented what was probably the first conscious attempt to
design dynamic speakers that had both flat response * and good dispersion. It
was also, I believe, the first speaker with dome drivers.

Some people enjoy owning classic products just for the heck of it. Don't knock
their desire.

In terms of accuracy, the contemporary KLH Nine electrostatic would beat the
pants off them. But the AR-3 was, for its era, an honest attempt to make an
honest speaker.

* My understanding is that although the individual drivers were "flat," the
tweeter was nevertheless "down" a couple of dB with respect to the woofer and
midrange. Anyone know for sure.

FWIW this sounds very much like there were problems elsewhere in the
system. I've heard AR-3as sound both spectacularly good and
spectacularly bad depending on the system context and room placement.

The above is, of course, a forgery.
The speakers have a following, and are subjectively excellent to those who
judge them so.

McCartydumpster has been touting his sound studio, made entirely out of clip
art.
It's not going anywhere.
It's a total failure.
McCarty is a total failure.

That's all you can do, Brian.
The price you pay for your mischief is nobody will go into business with
you.

The tradeoff is clear: Brian slanders and lies on R.A.M. = loss of business
opportunity.
As long as you want to keep shooting yourself in the foot, we'll supply the
bullets.

Attention all residents of Oz, particularly in the vicinity of Trinity
Beach, Cairns, Australia.
You have a piece of Yank scum living with you, for which we apologize as a
nation. His name is Brian L. McCarty, and he has forged the scurrilous post
reproduced below.

Following the reproduction is a backgrounder on McCarty.

***BREAKING NEWS ALERT***BREAKING NEWS ALERT***BREAKING NEWS ALERT***

READ DOWN.

The above is yet another forgery by Brian L. McCarty.
Talk about fake!!!

A couple of weekends ago, one of Brian's two websites,
http://www.worldjazz.com, fluctuated between Brian's placeholder website and
redirection to bet.com, as Brian decides how much he
wants to contest with BET who owns the website.
Now, as BET is a billion dollar company, and Brian is a fat man in a little
condo, guess who's gonna win? Watch the link carefully, and bet on how long
he can hold out.

When the inevitable occurs, Brian won't have the Worldjazz domain, which he
may not have any claim to anyway.
All the while he was trying to stick it to people for "unregistered
business", etc., it may turn out he didn't have the rights to use
http://www.worldjazz.com .

Brian still has one website left, composed entirely of clip art.
Since he insists on picking on Ken, let's get out the dynamite and do

MORE DEMOLITION!!!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!

From Brian's very own fake website, we have:
Information for Asia-Pacific region, contact David C. L. Feng at
coralse...@hotmail.com

Now why would Brian L. McCarty, if he's running a legitimate business, use a
hotmail address for a business contact?

The answer is simple: David C.L. Feng is a FAKE PERSON. He doesn't exist.

Why would Brian think a forger sitting in a $20K condo by the Coral Sea has
credibility?
If you think it's true, Brian, say it as yourself.
Of course, I'll be there to set the record straight on who you are, what you
are, and why your twisted mind actually appears to enjoy being disliked.

Brian, you could have had it all. You made a big score, and let it all leak
away. Your "friends" hate you. Jeff Wexler won't talk to you. There may
still be a world of opportunity for you somewhere, but thousands of people
read what you do here. Do you expect them to walk in the door, even if you
manage to cobble together a tiny one-room version of Coral Sea Studios? You
can't be a world-reknowned psychotic weirdo, and expect people to want to do
business with you.

Every time you post here, Brian, is a nail in your coffin. I hope you don't
take it out on your wife and kids. Do you hit her? Do you yell at your son
or deny him your affection? These are terrible things, Brian.

If there were any truth to it, one would wonder why McCarty would feel
compelled to forge it in my name.

Simply a LIE from Brian L. McCarty, r.a.m.'s notorious identity thief, liar,
swindler, scammer, and ne'erdowell.

It's an odd symptom of McCarty's sickly mind.
At the same time he's trying to grow his tiny (or nonexistent!) studio
business, Green Dolphin Media, he forges slanderous lies which make him
immensely unpopular.

Will he ever figure out that he's destroying himself? I doubt it.

Brian L McCarty, R.A.M'.S NOTORIOUS LIAR, lives above the shop of his
nonexistent studio at:

Green Dolphin Media
65 Vasey Esplanade
Cairns QLD 4870
worl...@ozemail.com.au

where he maintains an empty website full of never-to-be-fullfilled promises,
http://www.coralseastudios.com and http://www.worldjazz.com

McCarty has just redone his website, removing the egregious false
endorsements.
He still keeps the nonexistent "David C. L. Feng " as "Asian Market
Coordinator", somehow believing that Asians prefer not to deal with a fat
caucasian.

However,
Maybe Mr. Brian "Enron" L. McCarty can explain what happened to the $270,000
he owes
his employees?

So have I.
They should probably be mated with a bright amplifier.
The dome midrange permits very wide spacing, providing a very spacious
image.

He's going downhill fast.

Brian, you're actually helping Ken.
Ken is very well known now, since he is the only dealer who is constantly in

I can't resist the temptation to detonate some dynamite under McCarty's fat

There was an article about the design which indicated that the AR-3 was
designed with declining output from the bass on down. This was done in
order to provide flat response at the normal listening point based
on a comparison of an average of a large number of symphonic recodings
with the same material recorded by a condensor microphone at row "G" of
Symphony Hall.

Of course, measurement techniques ca 1960 were quite a bit different from
now.

I think I still have the article around here somewhere. It was part of
the AR promo kit for the AR3/3a.

I own a pair of AR3a's which, when still working, didn't sound too bad
(very musical, but definitely distorted compared to my Rogers LS3/5a's
or even my main University 315-C's). I will never forget, however, my
first experience of listening to operatic music on a double pair of KLH Nines
driven by a Marantz 7 and pair of Model 9 power amplifiers at Harvey's in
LA, ca 1965.

You are correct; the tweeter level was down a few DB relative to the
midrange and woofer.

The reason for this, was that the speakers were designed for a listening
position ~15-20ft away from the speaker.

The off axis response of the AR dome drivers was excellent. At the
recommended listening position, the off axis response combined with the on
axis response to present a "flat" response to the listener. Some have
pointed to phase anomalies due to the combination of on and off axis sounds.
With careful positioning, the anomalies can be minimized.

Overall, the speaker is a true classic that when used appropriately, can
still provide immense satisfaction for the listener.

Best,

JD

As an Apogee Diva owner, them's fightin' words...

The Divas are one of the few truly neutral speakers I've ever heard. Other than
the fact they lack the transient "snap" of live sound, I still haven't figured
out what they "really" sound like.

It was this sense of neutrality -- that you are hearing the recording and not
the speakers' "editorialization" about the recording -- that garnered many
Apogee models rave reviews.

Most of the speakers of the time could not compete against the AR's.
AR had the best dispersion, best range, best size. These
were my priorities, but I could not afford them at the time. I had AR'4s
that had severe limitations. Loudness wasthe worst feature.
I doubt if yopu could walk around and listen to the Dalquist around the room.
I know the piezo tweeters don't have good HF dispereion.
